UNL may implement two or three special interest
only residence hall floors next fall resulting from the
interest shown by residence hall students, accord
ing to a housing official.
Robert Brandt, complex program director of Sel
leck Quadrangle and chairman of the Special Inter
est Housing Committee, said it is considering adding
an upper classmen floor, a mentoring floor and a
quiet-hours floor to the residence halls.
A survey presenting 23 ideas for special interest
floors was distributed in February to students in the
residence halls. Brandt estimated that V3 of these
students responded. About 40 percent of those
responding asked to be contacted if any of the floors
are implemented, he said.
Brandt said students also showed high interest in
a music floor, a connoisseur floor, a wellness floor, a
single-room floor and a suite floor.
The suite floor would be "apartment-like suites
consisting of one double bedroom adjoining to a
living-room area," according to the survey.
Brandt said the three floors the committee is con
sidering for next fall could be implemented quickly
and without construction. He said others would
require more preparation.
Brandt said that implementing all the floors that
students are interested in could take five years. He
said he hopes to add more floors every year.
Brandt said the committee will recommend to the
directors and assistant directors of housing that
special interest housing be pursued.
Joe Petrick, Cather-Pound-Neihardt Complex Pro
gram Director, said he feels there is a need for cer
tain types of special interest housing. He said two
examples are needs for graduate housing and a
quiet-hours floor.
