Cartoon 'racist, sexist '
Articles and "jokes" such as the one in the March 5
Daily Nebraskan promote and perpetuate the ste
reotypes forced on Hispanics and women. As one
reads this "cartoon" it is evident that the Daily
Nebraskan staff is not sensitive to the need to eradi
cate racism and violence. Such misinformation and
word misuse gives your readers the wrong ideas
about the characteristics and behavior of Nebras
ka's Hispanic population. This can have terrible
repercussions in perpetrating racist and prejudicial
attitudes toward minorities and women.
The fact that this newspaper was disseminated is
a source of great concern. Our responsibility is to
report with integrity and honesty, not only to report
what we want to hear or show our biases.
Diversity of humanity is the key phrase. We live in
a diverse society, and we should respect all peoples'
human worth.

Call us irresponsible
Chris Welsch's scathing satirical attack on the
beleaguered ASUN candidates (Daily Nebraskan,
March 6) disappointed me a great deaL
I agree with him that the candidates tend to grope
for clear, attainable goals. I also agree that a great
many students consider ASUN superfluous, dull
and powerless. For these reasons, they do not vote,
which is fine. But to witness our student newspaper
constantly deriding our student government is offensive.
It appears to me that the major problem with
ASUN is a lack of student interest. This lack of inter
est leads to a corresponding lack of power. In order
to attain any voice in student affairs, ASUN must
have a formidable, student backing. Therefore, it
should follow, the leaders on our campus should
encourage participation and stimulate interest in
government, rather than participating in simple
minded criticism.
I consider it irresponsible for a student news
paper to suggest student government is dull and
superfluous. This does not appear to be parallel
Perhaps if ASUN attains some legislative power it
can ban the Daily Nebraskan for its dull articles and
superfluous journalism. This is a learning institu
tion: We are learning how to effectively run a stu
dent government as well as how to effectively print a
student newspaper. They should be, to a point,
mutually supportive.
