Scene, the Seldom Scene's long-awaited new release, faithfully fulfills hard-core blue-grass fan expectations of beautiful three-part harmonies and amazing breaks and also offers some nice surprises. The best surprise is the emergence of guitarist, singer and songwriter Phil Rosenthal. He sings lead on most of the songs; four are Rosenthal originals. Rosenthal's compositions, two gospels and two love related numbers, demonstrate his command of a key Seldom Scene skill the ability to turn hard times and unhappiness into strength and energy. For example, the first line of his "Winter Wind," "I'm here all alone in a valley of stone," conjures a deslo ate image, but a brisk tempo and Rosenthal's force ful vocals drive the song, making the sadness trium phant. Rosenthal also steps out instrumentally. He took only one or two split breaks on the Scene's previous album, but At The Scene features Rosenthal's fluid triplety style on several songs. "Born of the Wind," a fine example of controlled bluegrass frenzy, showcases each band member's instrumental talents. From bassist Tom Gray's wild man intro to Ben Eldridge's ominous chromatic banjo run ending, the pace is feverish. In between, John Duffy's spirited mandolin break and Mike Aul dridge's dobro work complement the tune's free-blowing-wind theme. Gospel enthusiasts will find much to like on At The Scene. The album boasts three excellent gospels: Rosenthal's "Open Up The Window, Noah," "The WTeary Pilgrim," and "Peaceful Dreams." Those music lovers suspicious of religious material need not shrink from the album, though. The band's religious songs are not the fire-and-brimstone kind. "Peaceful Dreams," for example, celebrates the handing down of culture through stories and songs. Appealing technical aspects of bluegrass gospels four-part harmonies, staggered singing, full church choir background "oohs," and a cappella choruses are expertly handled by the band. Gray's rich bass voice and Duffy's legendary tenor make Seldom Scene gospel tunes an event. The emotional charge and sustained notes of staggered gospel choruses allow Duffy to get funky and soulful, a dramatic departure from his usual studio album reserve. Duffy's funk and humor are also let loose on several mandolin breaks; sparse, discordant melodies are a Duffy trademark. The entire band gets a chance to reveal its sense of fun and humor on the album cover, one sure to rank in the all-time top-five of bluegrass album covers. An entertaining cover and the usual high quality Seldom Scene musicianship make "At The Scene" a must-have for every bluegrass fan.
