But you are not G-0, or you're unable to bench press 400 pounds, or have trou ble running the mile in less than four minutes, or you swallow more water than air swimming the butterfly. But you are a good athlete. At UNL an athlete has two options if he or she is unable to participate in varsity sports: either play intramurals or join one of the sports clubs on cam pus. "There are many good athletes "Jerry Howell, sports club ccorir.datcr, said. "The university just doesn't offer the" sports they're talented in." The newly-formed Sports Club As sociation offers students ten athletic clubs in which to compete ranging from crew to table, tennis. There are another ei;;ht clubs looking for accep tance in the association, Howell said. He added that 2S0 students are active ly involved in sports clubs, 0 percent of them are male, 20 percent female. Howell said he predicts the 1 34-85 school year will see student member ship in sports clubs increase 50 per cent, with a 25 percent increase in new clubs. Howell attributed the predicted increase to the new association. "This b the first year it has been organized as part of any department," Howell said. This is the first year they have been recognized on campus." Sports clubs have been put under the jurisdiction of campus recreation. The association consists of the presi dents of the 10 active clubs and How ell They have their own constitution and are working on a handbook that will be out next fall. In order for a club to seek active membership in the association, a club needs a faculty adviser, two members who have taken CPU and first aid classes, and to follow rules concerning budget, funds, and scheduling. Sports clubs will spend approximate ly $53,225 this school year, Howell said. Campus recreation provides 9 percent of the fees, totaling $18.1 1 per student. Participants contribute the other 91 percent, Howell said, or approximately 1170.23 per student The amount var ies between clubs because it is more expensive to be in crew than table ten nis, Howell said. .. They (the Committee for Fees Alio cation) didn't want to support club sports, but they dont realize how many people are in it and how hard they have worked," Howell said. Money that doesn't come out of the athletes pockets is raised by club members. For example, the water polo team is planning a trip to California, and the crew team is planning a trip to Texas. Honey for travel expenses and entry fees has to come from some where, Howell said. "They work very hard to raise their own money," Howell said. "They have raffles, dances, and get some money from alumni" Information on clubs is available at the Office of Campus Recreation, 472 3467.
