Pago 8 Tuesday, February 14, 1S34 Daily Ncbraskan iy I SJJ VJ .. . .. j; Injury sidelines Mike Bowers Frosli gymnasts vault into Mien By Patty Prjcr With the absence of junior all-around-er Mike Bowers, who's out for the sea son with a back injury, NU's three freshmen gymnasts have seen more action than most freshmen do in their first season. All-arounder Neil Palmer and spe cialists Eric Lambert and John Chmelka all competed in the Huskers' last home meet against Penn State, Ohio .State and Louisiana State. Palmer, this year's only recruit, has performed in every Nebraska competi tion so far this year, scoring a 9.4 twice on high bar and once in floor exercise and vault. ' In last week's quadrangular, Lam bert hit a 9.2 on vault and Chmelka scored a 9. 1 5 on pommel horse. . Chmelka also stepped in at the last minute on high bar because fellow freshman Dan Culliver was questiona ble for competition. "I just picked up a routine the Friday before," Chmelka said. "(Graduate Assist ant Jim) Hartung helped me out a lot with it." Former stars encouraging All three gymnasts talked about the advantages of working with former NU standouts Hartung, Phil Cahoy and Scott Johnson. The advantages far outweigh any. disadvantages in being eclipsed by the Huskers' past performances, they said. "There's a lot more advantages," Chmelka said. "The gr ad assistants are very good coaches and they're good just to be around. They're not up on a pedestal at all" ' Chmelka saidhes also learning from Husker horse specialist Frank Hibbitts. "We work out a lei together, coach ing each other and criticizing each other," Chmelka said. "I need to learn a lot more tricks and he knows practically every move there is to be performed." The caliber of current Jlusker gym nasts is a source of motivation, even though it means the freshmen may not share the spotlight as much as they would elsewhere. "I don't feel like I'm being oversha dowed at all," Palmer said. "And I don't mind going up first, anyway." that's why I didn't do all-around," he said. "But I've really been working hard on it lately " Chmelka comes from Omaha South High School and the Sokol Hall gymn stics club, where Hartung, Cahoy and Bowers all started out. He placed second in the all-around and first in horse and rings at the state two years in Shaumburg, 111., where he placed ninth in vault at the state meet his senior year. Lambert started out as a diver in high school and didn't move into gym nastics until he was 15. "I had a friend on the diving team who was a gymnast," he said, "and he told me to come to practice to see if I'd s, - A " ' y . . "Then everyone would be depending on me and I'd really have no room to grow." Chmelka follows sibling Chmelka may be more familiar with the Huskers' winning legacy than are his counterparts. . His older sister Carol competed for the Huskers and his older brother Chuck competed on three of Nebras ka's five national championship teams. "It really hasn't been, too hard to live up to, though," the younger Chmelka said. "I try not to look at it that way."- Chmelka said he hadn't intended to seriously pursue gymnastics in college. "I was real nervous," he said, "but I actually felt pretty relaxed once the meet started." Palmer, from Addison Trail High School in Addison, 111., was second in the all-around and first on parallel bars in the state meet his senior year. His high school team won the state championship three out of his four years of competition. Palmer said he also considered Ari zona State, Iowa State and the Univer sity of Minnesota before signing with Nebraska. "I knew it was going to better for my gymnastics here," he said.
