Women's basketball team loses
to nationally-ranked Wildcats

Kansas State's women's basketball team, to use a
slightly overused phrase from its own press guide,
has it all this year. Their height makes them one of
the tallest teams in the country, their speed, even
along the frontline, is superior to any conference
team and their depth is the best Nebraska Coach
Kelly Hill said she had seen this season.
Therefore, neither Kansas State Coach Lynn Hickey
nor Hill seemed too surprised after the 1 1 th-ranked
Wildcats defeated Nebraska 95-75 Saturday in Man
hattan, Kan.
The Wildcats had five scorers in double figures,
outrebounded the Huskers 52-31 and outshot them
59 percent to 39 percent.
Intimidation played a key role, Hickey said.
"Of course they (Nebraska) were a little intimi
dated," Hickey said. "Why shouldn't they have been?
We have a national ranking, taller players and we
were playing on our home floor."
Nebraska had its only lead, 3-2, when Stacy
Imming connected on a 18-foot jumper with one
minute gone. The Wildcats scored the next 10
points, all of the baskets coming from within 10 feet.
Debra Powell scored five of Nebraska's next nine
points, and Imming again hit from outside to close the
lead to 16-12 with just more than 12 minutes to play.
But Kansas State again used its height advantage
inside (6-1 forwards Jennifer Jones and Angie
Bonner and 6-3 Tina Dixon against 5-9 Powell, 5-8
Imming and 5-10 Angie Miller) to score 10 of the
next 12 points.
In the process, the Wildcats limited Nebraska to
only two defensive rebounds in the game's first 16
minutes.
"We got outrebounded again," Hill said. "They box
out very well. We're missing some important people
on our team that could help us there, but we're
still unable to convert the outside shot."
Kansas State led 44-29 at halftime and pushed
that lead to 62-37 before Nebraska scored 12 con
secutive points in a three-minute span. Nebraska
twice had chances to cut the lead to 1 1, with more
than 10 minutes to play, but both possessions ended

Landmann said she has made a quick aoustment
to Nebraska. She said she likes the people she has
met but doesn't like the weather.
u "I've settled down very quickly," Landmann said.
"Coach Devaney has been a big help."
Nebraska's women and men will compete Satur
day in the Husker Invitational at the Bob Devaney
Sports Center. No team scores will be kept in a meet
that will feature the Villanova track team. Villanova
still holds the world record it set in the distance
medley relay at the Husker Invitational two years
in turnovers.
The regrouped Wildcats then went back under
neath for easy baskets as Cindy Durham, Bonner,
guard Sheronda Jenkins and Dixon all scored from
within eight feet as the Big Eight's co-leaders pulled
away again.
"We were half-court trapping, and the trap was
working," Hill said about the comeback.
"The people they had in there weren't adj usting to
it and they were just giving us the ball," she said.
Hickey praised the Huskers' comback, but blamed
it partly on a letup by her team.
They were just flying up the court all night, and
when they're hot, they're going to be trouble," Hickey
said. "If they were cold in the second half like they
were in the first, it wouldn't have been any problem.
But they are a good team, and I promise you they
will be tough to beat up there (in Lincoln)."
