It's a powerful little word. The mere mention of it causes any thing from a smile to a groan. Some people think of fun and romance when they hear it. They think of the good side. But another side exists, and it causes some to shudder. Most. people have, had one of those horrible or embar rassing dates. Mary Alice Snider, co ordinator for the Ne braska auditions, said that in the past, this competi tion led to a contract with the Metropolitan Opera. Now the auditions are more of a "stepping-stone" to a professional operatic career because of the ex posure given to contestants. Rock will sing this spring in the UNL production of "The Magic Flute." John Dellaan and Greg Berg, both UNL graduate music students, won the Encouragement Award, which is given to the two most promising young singers in the auditions. Dellaan is a student of Donna Harler, UNL asso-. ciate professor of music, and Berg is a student of Richard Grace, UNL pro fessor of voice.
