By understanding the game better, Darlington said, the women are better able to enjoy it. Women learn to enjoy football Some women who want to learn about football are tak ing a Football for Women class taught by UNL defensive end Coach George Darlington. "The purpose is to help women understand the game," said Darlington, who has taught the class for five or six years. "This way, they will be better equipped to enjoy it." The six-week course, sponsored by KLIN Radio, is designed to give women a basic knowledge of football. It meets once a week for two hours. A similar course, offer ed at Southeast Community College, is taught by Lawrence Cooley, junior varsity line coach. "The women really seem to enjoy it and the interest in the class has picked up from year to year," Darlington said. "Right now there are 40 to 45 women in my class and 15 to 20 out at Southeast. Darlington said women do not feel so inhibited in ask ing questions since the class is for women only. "This way, a woman can go to a class with others who all have the same basic understanding of the game," Darlington said. "Men would tend to dominate the class if involved, which would defeat our purpose." The course covers a wide range of topics, with the emphasis being on learning how to watch and enjoy the game. The women are taught the basic rules and philoso phy of the game. They are also given an overview of the different aspects of offense and defense, and become familiar with the equipment used in football. Darlington hands out books with some of Nebraska's plays and has the woman walk through them. Toward the end of the course, the group goes to Memorial Stadium to see the football facilities, such as the locker and weight rooms. Ethel Schram, a student in the class, said "I love the class. There's really an art to football, something I had never realized before." "This is my third time for the class," said Judy Yeck, who works in the UNL journalism department. "1 like to hear George talk, and the class is different every time." sAt p44 Vl jLr I S a JunS'e out there but don't go ape . .
