K-State snubbed;
UNL hopes sink
A serious blow was dealt to UNL's basketball team's
hopes for a possible bid to the National Invitational
Tournament (NIT) Sunday in the form of an NCAA snub
of Kansas State University, KSU), the Big 8 Conference's
second-place team.
DePaul University, 19-8, was chosen over K-State's
Wildcats, 20-7, to fill the remaining at -large berth for.the
NCAA postseason tournament.
The Huskers had hoped the Wildcats would be invited
to the NCAA tournament, clearing the way for the third
place Huskers to represent the Big 8 in the NIT.
"It doesn't look good for us," said Lonnie Porter,
assistant UNL coach. "Kansas State probably will be in
line ahead of us (for an NIT bid)."
Half of the NITs 12-team field was announced
Sunday. The remaining six schools will be announced at
12:30 p.m. today. Providence, Louisville, Kentucky,
Niagara, Oregon and North Carolina A and T accepted
NIT bids Sunday.
Speculation last week centered on DePaul, KSU and
Utah of the Western Athletic Conference as the teams
still in consideration for the. NCAA at-large bid.
It was thought that weekend wins by KSU and the
University of Utah would result in an NCAA invitation to
one of the schools. DePaul, with its season completed,
was speculated to have a chance only if both KSU and
Utah lost.
Utah lost to the University of Wyoming, 64-61, Friday
and KSU defeated Oklahoma State University 82-78 in
overtime Saturday. However, the NCAA still picked
DePaul.
The Huskers' 82-66 win over Iowa State University
Saturday boosted their mark to 19-8, the third best in
UNL history.
The Huskers have competed in postseason tournaments
only twice. In 1949 the 16-10 Huskers lost to Oklahoma
State in NCAA playoff action. The Huskers appeared in
the NIT in 1967 with a 16-8 record, where they lost to
Marshall, 119-88 in the opening round.

The Husker women's basketball team edged Northwest
Missouri State University in overtime Saturday, 61-60, to
finish third in the regional tournament at Fargo, N.D. The
top two teams qualified for the national meet. In earlier
games, the Huskers beat St. Cloud State College of
Minnesota, 74-59, Thursday before falling to No. 1 seeded
William Penn College of Iowa, 50-44, in Friday's semi
finals. .
In the Saturday win, Nebraska used a full-court press
to vault to a 39-26 halftime lead. The Huskers were hurt
in the second half when freshman Jan Crouch and sopho
more Sherry Brink fouled out. Freshman Darcy William
son netted 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Kathy
Hawkins had 16 points, seven rebounds and 10 steals.
Against St. Cloud State, the Huskers were paced by
Brink's 24 points. They again used a full-court press to
overcome a 28-27 halftime deficit.
Nebraska shot only 11 per cent from the field in the
first half against William Penn to trail, 27-1 1, at halftime.
The closest the Huskers could come in the second half was
three points. Brink and Hawkins each had 12 points in the
loss.
The team, now 21-8, closes its season at the National
Women's Invitational Tournament in Amarillo, Tex.,
March 18 through 20.

Junior Pat DiBiase won the 100-yard breaststroke for
Jhe leading Husker performance at the Big 8 Conference
swimming championships Wednesday through Saturday at
Ames, Iowa. His time was .59.3 seconds. Defending
champion Bryan Moss, a sophomore, won the consolation
finals in 59.4 seconds to finish seventh.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, DiBiase had the fastest
preliminary time but was disqualified for an alleged illegal
kick. Moss took fourth in the event.
Freshman Mark Crowder swam the 100-yard butterfly
in a school record 52.2 seconds to place third. He also set
the school record of 21 .66 seconds in the 50-yard butter
fly, finishing seventh.
Senior Dave Watermeicr took seventh in the one-meter
diving, while sophomore Pat Murphy placed eighth in the
1,650-yard freestyle. The Husker 400-yard medley and
400-yard freestyle relays each finished sixth.
In team standings, Nebraska finished seventh. Hot
Iowa State University won, followed by the University
of Oklahoma and defending champion University of
Kansas.
Freshman Peggy Lid dick won four events to spark
UNL to a 60-31 track win over the University of Nebraska
at Omaha Saturday in Omaha. She took the long jump
(17 ft. 2 in.), 60-yard hurdles (8.7 seconds), 60-yard dash
(7.5 seconds) and 176-yard dash (22.4 seconds).
Sophomore Cindy Dixon won the mile in a school
record 5:30.9 and the 880-yard run in 2:32.6. She teamed
with sophomores Doris Hitz and Susie McConkey and
freshman Marie Pandorf to set a school record of 4:26 in
the mile relay.
Freshman Debbie Raddatz paced a Husker sweep in the
shot put with a school record 40 ft. 8Vi in. Freshmen Pam
Koontz and Char Beck followed second and third.

Depi.'s masters week with demonstrations
Friday and Saturday. In kendo, competitors
try to strike each other with bamboo poles.
In the high jump, senior Gloria Jarosz won with a
school record 5 ft. Freshman Marsanne Jablonski also
jumped 5 ft. to place third.
Freshmen Pam Baker, Cindy Krause and Lorrie Kaslon
took second fauthe long jump, 880-yard run and 176-yard
dash, respectively. McConkey placed third in the 440
yard dash.
Weigh-ins are between 3 and 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wed
nesday in, the Coliseum basement for the intramural
weightlifting meet. The meet begins at 6:30 p.m. each day
with the 1 14-, 123-, 132-, 148- and 165-lb. classes
competing Tuesday and the 181-, 198-, 220; and 242-lb.
and superheavyweight classes competing " Wednesday.
Weights and lifting belts will be furnished. T-shirts will be
awarded to the top two in each class, and a trophy 'to the

UNL's golf team left Lincoln Friday for San Antonio,
Tex., where the Huskers will compete, in their season
, opening tournament.
They will compete in the Menger Hotel Intercollegiate
Golf Classie at the Pecan Valley Golf Course Tuesday
through Friday. Golfers will play 72 holes in the four-day
tournament. "
Juniors Craig Meyer and Todd Thorson, sophomore
Doug Smith and freshmen Dave ' Donachie, - Tony
Pesavento and Steve Station made the trip for UNL.
