Dot-dash-dot becomes music Tuesday
Music inspired by th Morse Code will be played Tues
day at 8 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall when the Nebraska
Brass Quintet gives a free concert.
Morse code signals make up some of the rhythms in
Quintet for Brass Instruments, written in 1966 by the late
American composer Alvin Etler. One example is the SOS
message heard in the second movement, said Vernon
Forbes, UNL professor of brass instruments and Quintet
trombonist
Johann Pezel's Three Sonatas, and Two Sonatas, by
Daniel Speer, which will also be played, are examples of
baroque German tower music, Forbes said. During the
17th and 18th centuries, he said, this music was played
from church and civic towers to mark the hours of the
day.
"Nobody had wristwatches back then," he explained.
Also on the program Tuesday are an adaptation of
Bach's Contrapunctus No. 5 from his Art of the Fugue
and four movements from Suite from the Monteregian
Hills by Morley Calvert.
Members of the Nebraska Brass Quintet, besides
Forbes, are Dennis Schneider, professor of brass instru
ments, and Steven Erickson, School of Music graduate as
sistant from Holdrege, trumpets; music instructor David
Kappy, french horn; and William Lindau, music educa
tion senior from Wahoo, tuba.
