Word is made flesh at adult book stores by Bart Becker Its anagram would be ABC. Its given name is the Adult Book and Gnema Shop. And at the two Lincoln shops, the word is made flesh. The shops popped up during the summer. The downtown location is just south of Zephyr Billiards.on North 11th Stree. A smaller shop is located at 27th and Holdrege Streets. They're owned by Jerry Maibe, who found himself in a legal whirlwind earlier this summer when he first came to town with his truck full of adult materials. They were confiscated, and city authorities tried to stop Maib from opening the shops. Since then Maibe won a reprieve, and the shops are operating. But the county attorney's office now is asking in a civil suit that Maibe's goods and services be declared obscene. That request is pending. iS 1 jrine I U n jfr Qfts A sign on the door of the downtown shop cautions: "If you object to the display of the nude body, do not enter." The nude bodies on display aren't exactly the kind you'll find hanging around the locker room after basketball praceice. Nor are they the airbrushed bunnies a prominent "entertainment for men" magazine graces its pages with. Lenny Bruce once said that if the naked African girts in National Geographic knew they were the focal point of his sexual fantasies as a kid, they'd have demanded a higher modeling fee. But National Geographic isn't much compared to the photographic displays of San Francisco Ball. The Adult Book and Cinema carries the latter, but the Geographic is conspicuous in its absence. Instead, as the Lincoln manager of the stores says, the stores carry a wealth of other literature for the pleasure seeker. They include hard core, nudie and male magazines; pocketbooks and novels; comics; greeting cards; records "Shaft man" and games "Gulp and Giggle." For the individual who has something other to do with his time and his hands than read a book, there are reocrds and tapes. I n addition, a multitude of "sexual accessories and novelties" are available. So that's the adult book. But what about the cinema? It's actually a movie arcade with coin-operated machines. Drop a quarter in the slot and see action you probably won't see anywhere else in the city without breaking down some doors and barging in during the night. The downtown shop has eight machines; the Holdrege street location has five. The shops average a combined 500-800 customers dairy, according to the store manager. About 80 per cent of the customer's are in the 30 to 40-year-old bracket. That's a lot of people who don't object to the nude body. The manager also mentioned that "quite a few women and girls come in, too. Mostly in the evening." In addition to the two Lincoln stores, Maibe has similar shops in Illinois, Utah and Iowa. College kids for a day Seniors from 96 Nebraska high schools are expected to participate Saturday in the first of a series of Senior I nformation Days on the UNL campus. Students will be touring the campus, eating lunch in the dormitories and attending sessions on courses of study conducted by faculty and administrators. Similar information days are scheduled for Oct. 21 and Nov. 11. Theisen 's petition fails A petition attempt to challenge Regent Ed Schwartzkopf in November's general election has failed, the secretary of slate's office reported Wednesday. More than five of the 754 signatures submitted Monday by Mrs. Jean S. Theisen, Lincoln, were invalidated, according to that office. Theisen needed 750 valid signatures to secure a place on the ballot. Allan Beermann, secretary of state, said 41 of the first 150 signatures checked by his office were invalid. This leaves Schwartzkopf unopposed in his bid for a second yterm on the Board of Regents. ,cbij nobroslccn Editor-in-chief: Jim Gray. Managing Editor: Tom Lansworth. News Editor: Randy Baem.
