Husker Grapple rs Have Tough Opener
Oregon's Rick Abrahamson blocks a Nebraska shot
but is guilty of fouling Ron Simmons.
NU Blasts Ducks
In Opener, 79-56
A near capacity crowd of
7,800 turned out for Nebras
ka's opening basketball
game Friday to see the
Huskers outclass the Ore
gon Ducks, 79-56, and give
early warning that Nebras
ka could again be a Big
Eight powerhouse.
Nebraska showed signs of
first game jitters in the
first half but didn't let the
trend continue as they hit
four straight baskets early
in the second half to surge
from a narrow 35-34 lead to
a 43-34 edge with 15:06 re
maining. , Three baskets by Stewart
L a n t z and one by Tom
Baack accounted for the
eight point surge that put
Nebraska in command.
Baack finished high for Ne
braska with 27 points, in
cluding a 9-10 effort from
the free throw stripe, Lantz
and Willie Campbell were
next for Nebraska with 19
and 13 points respectively.
Oregon, who fell to Kan
sas State Saturday, 52-45,
was paced by guard Nick
Jones with 17 points.
Nebraska's next encoun
ter will be at Wyoming on
Wednesday.
Freshmen Win
The Husker frosh opened
their season last Thursday
in a high scoring contest at
Des Moines, Iowa, beating
the Drake freshmen 101 to
90. Tom Scantlebury paced
the Husker freshmen with
24 points. The Nebraska
frosh will host Creston Jun
ior College tonight at 7:30
in the Coliseum.
Bob To Speak At I-Stale
Bob Devaney, coach of
the four-time Big Eight
champions at Nebraska,
will be the speaker at the
annual Iowa State football
recognition banquet Jan. 5.
Mai Schmidt, executive
director of the Cyclone
Club, said Devaney would
come direct from the Corn
huskers' Sugar Bowl en
gagement with Alabama.
The banquet will be held in
Memorial Union on the
Cyclone campus.
Devaney ranks just as
high on the banquet circuit
as he does in the coaching
circles. He has built the best
won-lost record among the
active major coaches dur
ing stints at Wyoming and
Nebraska.

Nebraska's wrest
lers break into the 1966-67
season Thursday in Lincoln
against always tough Iowa
State.
. The Cornhusker grapplers
will be running head-on into
a Cyclone squad that has
proven, like other Big Eight
schools, to be a major pow
er in national ranks.
Iowa State, who finished
second in the NCAA collegi
ate' wrestling tournament
last year, was the country's
championship team the sea
son before.
And they're no exception
in the Big Eight.
Husker coach Orval Bor
gialli claims Nebraska is in
the "finest competition"
there is.
"There's nq doubt we're
in the toughest conference
in the naiton," said the Hus
ker mentor.
"As long as I can remem
ber, Big Eight teams have
been one-two-three in t h e
national tournament," he
added.
Borgialli also pointed out
that the champion of the
Big Eight is usually a safe
bet for the national winner.
It is therefore reasonable
that a match between teams
in the league will provide
some of the best college
wrestling in country.
There will be at least 10
varsity matches when NU
and ISU clash this Thurs
day at 7:30 p.m. An
eleventh match will depend
on whether Borgialld can
come up with a heavyweight
to complete his team.
Unless the heavyweight
position can be filled, the
Huskers will enter the meet
ing with one strike gainst
them.
All other divisions will be
filled by the top NU wrest
lers in all weight classes.
Fresmen will also perform
in 10 divisions, with the de
letion of the optional 191
class.
The varsity rundown:
115 Larry Tepley; 123
Jerry Langdon; 130 Ron
Thon; 137 Bob Kuchera;
145 Dennis Dobson; 152
Dwayne Dobson; 160 Gary
Hoffman; 167 Harry Gay
lor; 177 Ben Barrends and
191 Gene Libal.
Freshmen contend
ers, who will wrestle at the
same time as their varsity
counterparts, are 115 Gary
Gnage; 123 Bill Rawlings;
130 Fred Stamm; 137
Bruce Colvin; 145 J o h n
McVay; 152 Richard Dud
geon; 160 Howard Putter;
167 Paul Johnson; 177
Jim Reeder and Hwt. -Mike
Burdic.

igan State and Bob Devaney

tion convention in Houston
