Where the
Action Is
By LARRY ECKHOLT
Although the Missouri-Nebraska football game is
called a "regional" broadcast by ABC-TV, the game will
be aired in 34 states, including all of Nebraska.
Since the first of the year, when the contracts were
signed with ABC-TV, the NCAA and the Nebraska Board
of Regents, preparations have been made for the game.
But this week, the action moved into high gear, with the
ABC technicians and production personnel in Lincoln lay
ing the groundwork and the rest of the television people
in town today to finish the work.
There will be seven cameras televising the game with
the pick-up station in Hollywood. One of the cameras will
be atop a 150 foot crane located in the south end of the
stadium.
The game will be televised in full "living" color and
both teams have promised to add "live" action. And with
respect to both teams, I doubt if the action could be
anything but live.
Announcers for the game will be Chris Schenkel, Bill '
Fleming and Bud Wilkinson.
Preparation for a televised football game includes
more than just setting up the equipment. All of the mu
sic (to be played at half-time by the two bands) had
to be cleared through the various publishing houses be
fore permission was given to play.
This summer a team of technicians inspected Mem
orial Stadium to insure that Nebraska's facilities were
adequate. They were.
A film-clip on the University of Nebraska covering the
academic and cultural side of the school had to be sup
plied for the pre-game show. And last week an ABC pho
tographer was in Lincoln to shoot Larry Wachholtz, on
film that is. A special show on "The Little Man in Col
lege Football" will also be featured on the network pre
game show.
: All of this (and much more behind the scenes) pre
cedes a college football game to be televised. Keep in
mind that ABC broadcasts four games a week and you'll
probably wonder, like I do, how a game ever makes it
into your living room.
Those poor Coloradoans are still lamenting their loss
to the Huskers and among most poignant is the verse of
Count Casotti, better known as Fred Casotti, the CU Sports
Information Director:
(with apologies to Eliza Doolittle)
We're getting buried in the morning,
Bing, bong, the Buffs can't make a dime,
We came so close, though
But all we got was place-show,
, 'Cause we didn't get to the Churchich on time.
: ,, (with apologies to Roger Miller)
You can't roller skate through my Buffalo herd.
But you can move through the air like a big red bird.
OSU and Nebraska will back up my word
And I think I'm gonna kill myself tomorrow.
One Big Red just left us,
Another's on the way
No wonder us poor Buffaloes
Are all chipped up today.
One last thing
Since predictions are is line this year, I'm going to
try my first. Nebraska has had its ups and downs, but
when things have been really down, the Huskers have
come up.
My feelings are that Nebraska as a team jelled in
the first half of the Colorado game and came out on
the fierce Folsom Field to win in the second half. Ne
braska, tip to now, has played to the ability of the other
team. They've won them all, but lacked a certain touch
of polish. That changed in the second half of the CU
game.
So, Missouri has had its season marred by a tie with
Iowa State, the same team that nearly did the same to
Nebraska, but the Huskers had the right play to win it
Nebraska is being scouted by two bowls this week
the Orange and the Sugar. The game is being televised.
The game is at home, with 60,000 of the 65,000 wearing
red.
I see it NEBRASKA 27, MISSOURI 17.

Stith Leads Huskers
In Unaided Tackles
By Ed Icenogle
Sports Assistant
Could you imagine 6-5,
261-pound University of Ne
braska tackle Carel Stith as
an interior decorator?
His interior work is act
ually on the inside of the
Husker line and his decora
tion comes on the statis
tics sheets of the leading
NU linemen.
The hulking Husker, who
hopes to play pro ball after
graduation, leads Nebras
ka in unassisted tackles and
is now third in the as
sisted category.
Stith has 32 unaided take
downs to his credit and
ranks behind AU-American
candidate Wayne Meylan
and Lynn Senkbeil with 25
assisted ones.
Card's rush on defense
has also netted NU two re
covered fumbles, a blocked
punt and a blocked pass so
far this year.
Stith, a 1963 graduate of
Lincoln Southeast High,
thinks that the time he has
spent on Cornhusker foot
ball is well worth it.
"It's given me a lot of
personal satisfaction," he
explained. "It's helped me
through school and it's
helped me get an educa
tion." Carel is in business ad
ministration, but said he
would like to play pro ball
after graduation.
About Bob Devaney's Big
Eight football dynasty,
Stith says, "It's pretty darn
miraculous."
"It should continue for
two or three years," he
added referring to league
domination. Stitii was quick
to add that the Cornhuskers
would remain in contention
for the conference crown for
years after that.
His opinion of the cause
of NU's success? "The
coaching staff. I think
they're about the best
coaches in tht nation."
S a t u r d a y's intramu
ral football games will be
gin at 9:30 a.m. instead of
10:00 a.m. because of the
early start of the Nebraska-Missouri
game.
