The Daily Nebraskan
Rood Awakening
It is the time of raters and guessers. NU fans, fed
by a renewed winning tradition, aren't tiring of it.
Most listen to AI' and ITI . . . XV enlisting selected
scribes who know a little more or less than anybody else
while the LTI depends on top coaches, who definitely
have time to scan football fortunes from Maine to Cali
fornia. Wally Provost of the World-Herald notes the coaches
are suspected of passing (ha) their chores off on sports
Information directors (euphemism for PR Men). I would
think these gentlemen are so knee-pad deep in Local
Color that the researched hunch gives way to the split
second scribble.
Preach ing Possibilities
On down to the sheets for handicappers and the for
mer sports greats who preach possibilities to the raven
ous rabble.
And so it is that the liuskers are rated fifth in Kick
off Magazine down to somewhere around 20th in Dunkcl's
digital mass.
Football, not being divorced from the rest of the world,
Is subject to Tremendous Trivia ratings being part of it.
Emphasis surrounds the Word rather than the Deed.
Perhaps your columnist is bitter, There were no laugh
ing letters awaiting me this week, but forecasts last week
dipped to three for ten. This coming from knowing noth
ing about the ten toughest-to-select games in the country.
Season total: 26 for 47.
While your martyred muffer was fumbling through
ten toughies, fearless Tom Harmon managed to have at
770 games, being successful at a 74.3 rate. I betcha
Tom knows little more than I do about it.
Tom One Better
In fact, he does. Of the ten I tried last week, Tom
was on for the better. He went four for ten,
I figure if Tom can do it, so can I. How about padd
ing the list by guessing on the Bottom Ten. So here they
are, upset picks included.
My all-time great Slippery Itoek shall fall in a land
slide upset to California State. The Hocks haven't had
the offense this year.
Other visions see Southern Connecticut over Mont
clair by a "grette" ash; Upsala should catch Lycoming
going down; Carthaginians couldn't beat the Romans, or
was it the Greeks, but they can sack Millikin; Lakeland
can down Northland; Northern Michigan will find St.
Norbert's defense Holy; Trinity can triple Angelo's score;
Western Carolina over Emory & Henry, both of them;
Wofford can harvest Newberry and Alfred should shatter
Brockport's hopes.
I will leave the big Wilkes-Ursinus battle to Fearless
Flasnick on Friday.
llig Eight Time
On to the Big Eight half seriously.
Iowa State two straight at Colorado's expense; Okla
homa with early trouble, will later blast Kansas by 20;
Missouri easily over Oklahoma State.
The worst Kansas State could beat the Huskers in
their 50-game rivalry was 27-0 in 1953. Last year Nebras
ka was the winner, 41-0. It'll be mere like last year, one
would think.
Being a Dodger fan, no kiss of death intended and
make it NEBRASKA 36, KANSAS STATE 6.

K-State
Leads Big Eight
By Ed Icenogle
Sports Assistant
Undefeated Nebraska will
face the threat of the Big
Eight's leading rusher this
Saturday as the Corn
huskers take on winless
Kansas State at Memorial
Stadium.
K-State's Cornelius Davis,
who has carried 73 times
for a net gain of 445 yards
and an average of 6.1 yards,
will be operating from the
Wildcats' fullback slot.
Davis has the best net
yardage for one game in
the conference with a total
of 161 yards in the 21-6 loss
to Army. In that same
game Davis rambled 89
yards for the longest touch
down run. in the 1966 Big
Eight records to date.
Kansas State, with losses
to Army, New Mexico, Colo
rado and Missouri, will also
have the dual talents of
tailback Ossie Cain. Cain
has netted 99 yards in 31
ground trips in addition to
44 yards more from seven
pass completions.
K-State coach Doug
Weaver hopes to have the
services of sophomore quar
terback Bill Nossck, who
was sidelined with a lung
injury in the second gam1
of the season.
