Friday, September 30, 1966 J Aage 4 The Doily Nebraskan You Can't Win 'em All By BOB FLASNTCK Sports Editor The 11:40 a.m. "milk train" out of Iloldrege Neb. is undoubtedly one of the most unappealing means of travel on which to return to Lincoln after a summer vacation. That particular train stops at every little burg along the line, (Exeter, Saronville, Friend, Funk etc) and sel dom does it get up a full head of steam before it begins to slow down for the next stop. : But on my return trip to Lincoln this year I hardly noticed the jolting stops and the lengthening hours of the trip. The reason being that I was reading a book which completely captured my interest, something which rarely happens in my case. The name of the recently published book was "Go Big Red." It is writtten by liollis Limprecht, James Denney and Howard Silber of the Omaha World Herald It contains a history of Nebraska football from its humble beginning in 1890 through Bob Devaney's undefeated team of 1965. "Go Big Red" brings back nostalgic memories to those who are able to remember coaches Jumbo Stiehm, D. X. Bible and Biff Jones while presenting a thorough and enlightening account of the Devaney era. The tradition of tlie "Fighting Cornhuskers" and thier accompaniment of spirited fans dates far back into the 20th Century and the book makes it clear that the pop u larity of the team today is a rejuvination of that long embedded ertfhusiasm for the Huskers. Hand "Go Big Red" to a Husker fan and immediately he will thumb his way through the pages until he reaches the team he remembers best. For Bob Wickham, Con ductor on that sporadic train from Iloldrege, it was the era of Biff Jones. Glancing through the pages Conductor Wickham spied a picture of one of his past teammates at Lincoln's old Havelock High School who had later gone on to play foot ball at Nebraska. This led him to recall the scrappiness of the high school teams in his day, and even to how he had almost been ejected from a game by game official Greg McBride (now with the Omah World Herald) for some bad language he had ventured to use in a game with Creigh ton Prep. As the train chugged out of Crete, Conductor Wickham began to analyze the whole spectrum of Nebraska football, junior high through college and his analysis didn't end until the 11:40 "milk train" out of Iloldrege jerked to a stop in Lincoln's Burlington Station.
