The Daily NebrosVen Page 3 Colleges Report Theft Increases By Julie Morris Junior Staff Writer Theft on college campuses has become a serious prob lem according to a recent ar ticle in a national magazine. A writer charges, "College students steal. They steal more each year than the year before." The security chief for one Big Ten school countered the charge saying that "We have no more crimes on campus than in any other populated area." Fifteen Theft Reports Capt. Eugene Masters, Campus police chief, reported that "not too many" theft re ports were made at his of fice. He said there were only about 15 such reports in the last month. Some of the thefts were in cidents of loss of bicycles, billfolds, clothing and purses. Most of the items reported stolen, though, were car ac cessories, Masters said. Hub caps, floor mats, side view mirrors and air clean ers were frequent objects of theft, Masters noted. He said that stolen bicycles were us ually located on some other part of the campus or city and that they were apparent ly simply borrowed for short rides. Don't leave purses, brief cases, clothing and books in a portion of the library, stu dent lounge or other campus spots where it's difficult to keep an eye on them. Make sure your locker is securely locked at all times. Don't keep large sums of money in your room. Inform the campus police of any suspected theft, no matter how small. The re port will alert police that a thief may be operating on campus. The seminar is an out growth of a decision by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools to emphasize foreign delations teaching in Nebras ka and Iowa schools. The program is financed by a grant from the U.S. Office of Education, according to Dr. Willis Moreland, Universi ty professor of secondary edu cation and seminar coordinator. Gene Gaddio Purges Self A University journalism stu dent, Gene Gaddie, 30, purged himself of contempt charges before Federal District Judge Robert Van Pelt Wednesday. Gaddie was cited by Van Pelt for contempt of court Tuesday when six jurors and one alternate juror on the Du ane Pope murder trial stated in court that they had been contacted by the student. Gad die reportedly telephoned the jurors to question them about how trial duty was affecting their private lives. Gaddie appeared before Van Pelt Wednesday and read a statement in which he said he thought he was asking the jurors permissible questions. Gaddie said he wouldn't have talked to the jurors if he had realized that it was wrong. The student said he wanted to apologize to the judge and that he hoped his actions hadn't interferred with Pope's right to a fair trial. i "A CLASSIC THRILLER!
