A Funny Thing Happened On The Way Home From
The Hula Bowl. . . and Husker track fans breathed a sigh
of disappointment as sprint star Kent McCloughan signed
a professional football contract.
Kent would have been the member of a sprint corps
which not only would have had dual meet contenders
shaking but quite possibly could have been the best in the
Big Eight.
Besides Kent, who owns times or 9.7 ani 6.2 in t h e
100-yard and 60-yard indoor dashes respectively and is the
Big Eight 220 champion, there arc junior Lynn Headley
and sophomore Charles Greene.
Lynn, who was hampered by muscle trouble most of
his sophomore season, nevertheless made the Olym
pic team for his native Jamaica. He competed in the 100
meter dash in Tokyo last October.
Charlie was last year's freshman sensation as he
pushed the incomparable Bob Hayes to a blazing 5.9 world's
record at the Madison Square Garden Indoor Meet in
February.
These three easily could have placed 1-2-3 in the indoor
60 and the outdoor 100-yard dashes and it would have
been anybody's guess who would have crossed the tape
first.
But it is ridiculous to think about what would have
been. Because Kent McCloughan has turned pro. The guy
who once ran the 100 and 220 with a badly sprained ankle
received in spring football practice is now reported by
the Oakland Raiders as fearing injury if he competes in
track.

The Cornhuskers try to put
the skids to a six game loos
ing streak Monday as the
Iowa State Cyclones invade
Nebraskaland for a Big Eight
Conference scrap.
Last Monday Iowa State
lost a 67-48 decision at Okla
homa State. This was the
site of the 93-54 trouncing of
Nebraska on the previous Sat
urday. Cyclone starters are Al
Koch, 6'3" forward; Gary
Jones, 6'4" forward; Dave
Fleming, 6'5" center; Bob
Ziegler, 6'3" guard; and Bob
Vander Wilt, 6'1" guard.
Koch is a junior from Ana
mosa, Iowa. He was shifted
to forward earlier this season
to take advantage of his
quickness and good shooting.
His relative lack of size does
not hamper his rebounding,
which is considered strong.
Fleming is a sophomore
from El Dorado, Arkansas,
who was rcd-shirted last year
because of injuries. He is
strong and considered a good
shooter.
Jones is a Junior from Sioux
City. He is sound defensive
player.
Ziegler is a junior guard
from Fort Dodge. He is a
leader, and a good shooter
and driver.

Vander Wilt is a senior from
Spencer, Iowa. He and Zieg
ler team well together and
generally harass the b a c k
court offense of the opposing
team.
It is generally felt that the
Iowa State game could be
the break in the losing streak,
and the start of the upswing
of Nebraska morale. This is
really a 'must' win for the
Cornhuskers.

Hoping to improve on last
year's sixth place in the Big
Eight indoor meet. Nebraska
thinclads are entering the last
two weeks of practice before
the season opener with Kan
sas State Feb. 6.
The Huskers have three
returnees who scored points in
last year's conference meet
plus eleven other lettermen.
Jim Bcltzer, Mho placed
fourth in the shot put, Dave
Crook, who Mas fifth in the
440, and Dick Strand, who
along with Crook ran a leg
on the second place mile re
lay team, are the returning
point-getters.
Kent McCloughan, who also
ran a leg on the relay, has
signed a professional football
contract and is ineligible to
compete.
Husker hopes for a come
back will have to be based on
peak performances of veter
ans and the untested strength
of new additions to the squad.
Two years ago. Nebraska won
the indoor crown after a sea-

Husker swimmers head for

in the shape of two meets,
with Southern Illinois Univer-i

respectively. , I
Coach Dick Klaas's men
will be trying to better their;
performance of last weekend
when they were drubbed by,
Iowa and edged out Big Eight
rival Kansas in a three-sided
dual meet.
Klaas himself will be unable j
to make the trip due to a
slipped disc.
The stiffest competition j
should come in Friday's meet
at Carbondale, 111., as SIU has
consistently come up with a
record-setting (last year tHey
broke five Coliseum poo! re
cords in a 5341 victory) team
boasting depth, too.
Their strengths should 1 i e
mainly in the distance free
style, butterfly, individual
medley and breaststroke. This
doesn't leave too many areas
of weakness, but the Huskers
will be fishing for points in
the freesytle sprints and the
diving.
Saturday the team will
journey to St. Louis for a
meet Mith Washington Univer
sity. A victor last year by a
score of 53-42. Nebraska will

For more sprint points Tom

The 400-yard medley relay

Lettermen returning to
Coach Frank Sevignc's squad
include high Jumper Jack

during last spring's outdoor
campaign.
Spring corps returnee is

Preston Love. Love has de

has indicated he has a ver

the Lions once track is over.
Middle distance returnees
are juniors Tucker Lillis and
Peter Scott and seniors Strand
and Jim Wendt. Wendt missed
the outdoor season last year
after undergoing a knee oper
ation. Two-year lettermen Jim
Murphey and George O'Boyle
join junior Crook in the 440.
Distance veteran Larry
Toothaker, a senior, will be
joined by Manro Altizio who

due to scholastic ineligibility,

Newcomers to the squad are
headlined by sprinter Charles
Greene who is more than cap

dash. Tom Millsap is the oth

sophomore Ray Harvey and

the hurdle corps.
Adding strength in the 440

Bob Zellers, all sophomores.
Rounding out the distance

Juniors Larry Shineman and
Dick Schneible and sophomore
