Though the big man is dominating the bounce-ball
game these days, in the Big Eight there are some pretty
dynamic so-called short men.
Missouri, which visits the Coliseum Saturday, has prob
ably the best combination. Bob Price (6-1) and Gary
Garner (5-11) team in the backcourt and propelled the Ti
gers to third place in. the recent conference tournament
at Kansas City.
Of course, the big gun was -7 Ray Bob Carey who
bagged his share, but the Price-Garner duo gunned home
a bundle when the defense sagged In on Carey. Watch
their speed and ball handling tomorrow night.
For the tournament champion Kansas State, Max
Moss (6-0) and Sammy Robinson (6-0) give the Wildcats
excellent ball handling and drive.
Robinson led K-State from the woods in the tourna
ment finals against Oklahoma State. As the Cowboys
played a loose defense outside in hopes of stopping 7-0
Roger Suttner and exciting 6-6 Willie Murrell, Robinson
stayed outside and potted 14 points to keep Kansas State
in the lead. And he's only a sophomore.
For Oklahoma State, a 58-55 loser in the finals, there's
Larry Hawk. Now to look at this 6-footer, you'd think he
was the ball boy he looks young, man.
But on the court, he's something else again. Hawk
keeps the Pokes moving, steals that ball when you least
expect it, and scores his share from, the outside.
Top Effort
Murrell showed the most at Kansas City, however. He
scored 30 against Nebraska in the opening game, 27
against Missouri in the semifinal before tapering off to
16 in the finals. That's 73 if you add it up.
But as a enjoyer of good defensive basketbal, Mur
rell's effort in the finals took the prize.
Coach Tex Winter had his boys in a zone with Mur
rell the deep man under the basket. That's where James
King of the Cowboys sets up on offense, and he's their top
scorer.
To make a long story short, King got off no shots in
the first half and just four in the second, mainly because
Murrell was right with him. Kansas State beat Oklahoma
State at its own game defense.
NU Alums
Viewing the Big Eight tournament were a coupe of
Huskers who left their marks in the football stadium and
Coliseum.
Warren Powers, who played some fine fullback for
Coach Bob Devaney in 1962, was in attendance. Now
with the Oakland Raider defensive unit Powers is waiting
it out until going into the Army.
Moving up to the Raiders after spending the early
part of the season on the taxi squad, Powers played some
fine defensive halfback for surprising Oakland.
The Raiders didn't win the title, "but if we hadn't
lost those first four games, we would have done all right,"
says Powers.
Spending his vacation from Northwestern in Kansas
City was Ivan Grupe, the Byron strongboy who toiled for
the basketball team for three lettering years.
Grupe is helping Coach Joe Cipriano with the recruit
ing in the Chicago area. And doing quite a job. "I've
never known a former player to be of so much help,"
says Cipriano.
For Higgenbottom
I've never had any runins with Ed Higgenbottom. the
intramural director. But he runs a pretty fair country in
tramural program. And if he gives you IM managers an
inch they'll take a mile. So cut the gripes.

Lodwig, the high varsity
scorer, is one of nine juniors
on the varsity. Twelve of the
remaining fifteen are soph
omores, which will provide a
very strong nucleus for next
year.
Since the varsity outnum
bers the freshmen 24 to 14,
Coach Dick Klaas has limited
lettermen to competition in
one event and non-lettermen
to one event and a relay.
Freshmen may swim the nor
mal three events and a relay.

8 opener, Nebraska's basket
ball team will attempt to stay
atop the loop standings against
Missouri Saturday night.

derdogs, but they'll be play
ing on the friendly NU Coii-

Jerry Spears, a 6-6 wheel
horse who tallied eight points
and grabbed eight much-needed
rebounds, will get the call
at center. Leading scorer
Harold Cebrun and soph Grant
Simmons will man the guards,
while 6-5 junior Joel Kortus
and veteran Charlie Jones
will be at the forwards.
Kortus sunk two last-minute
free throws to ice the open
ing Big 8 victory for rookie
coach Cipriano.
Nebraska is now 2-9 for the
season and 1-0 in conference -play.
Coach Bob Vanatta's
Tigers also share top billing
in early Big 8 going with a
1-0 mark. - . .
