For his 4:04.9 performance, Stevens is given the Daily Nebraskan Star of the Week Award. Skip, as he is known to his Wends, said "I felt just won derful because I beat them all.". During the race, the quar ter times were called out and Skip said he knew it was go ing to be a fast mile. In fact ' ' nis iinai quarter was :o.o as timed by Coach Frank Se vigne. Skip gives Bob Griffith of Colorado credit for the fast time. "He set the pace be cause neither Jerry Mt-Fad-den (Missouri) or I would and Pat McNeal (Kansas State) couldn't." Stevens, McFadden, Mc Neal and Griffith all ran close together during most of the race. McNeal faded slight ly on the backstretch and the other three battled it out. On the final carve Stevens grabbed the edge and kept ahead of the other two. The Nebraska star finished five-tenths of a second ahead of McFadden and a good six feet in front of the Missouri entry. The best mile time before this was 4:11.3 run as a soph omore against Barrie Al mond of Houston. Since that time, Skip has been running fairly consistent at 4:12 or 4:13. Now that he has dipped down to 4:04.9, he hopes this will be his new consistent mile time.
