What is an Outstanding Ne
braskan really like?
Dr. Robert Hough's wife,
friends and associates will
tell you that he is sincere, re
s p e c t e d, personable, well
liked, active, and has a won
derful sense of humor.
A visit to Hough's spacious
home will reveal three blond
headed youngsters, presently
sick with the chicken pox,
ready to inform yon about
their family.
Carol, 4, and Johnny, 1, lis
ten attentively as Timmy, 3,
tells you that they have a
sister Alison, 7, at school and
that they also have an older
brother named "Daddy
Eonk."
Bonk
Mrs. Hough explained that
"Bonk" is an official nick
name given by the children
to other members of the fam
ily. An avid sports fan. Dr.
Hough captained the baseball
and basketball teams of Po
mona College in California
where he graduated Magna
cum laude. Receiving six col
lege letters, he was also a
Phi Beta Kappa.
Sports shared a common in
terest by other members of
Dr. Hough's family. His fath
er and older brother were at
one time professional base
ball players and his younger
brother was an All-Coast bas
ketball player at UCLA. Dr.
Hough's father, who retired
in 1952, was production man
ager at Twentieth Century
Fox. In 1949, Dr. Hough and a
friend bicycled through
France and Switzerland. He
has also been in most parts
of the United States.
Receives Ph.D.
Shortly after this, Dr.
Hough received his masters
degree from Columbia Uni
versity. He taught journal
ism at Whittier College, Cal
ifornia, until he decided to
go to Stanford University,
also in California, and get his
Ph.D. in English.
He and his Australian-born
wife moved to Lincoln" in
1956.

Robert L. Hough, who has done a great
deal of critical writing, has also written
introductions to numerous novels. Al
though be devotes much time to bis own
intellectual endeavors, Dr. Hough has been
described as an instructor who possesses

Dr. Hough and his wife also
spend their leisure time play
ing tennis. His wife is affec
tionately called "sport" and
he calls his oldest daughter
"little sport."
This Outstanding Nebras
kan also is an active mem
ber of the First Plymouth
Congregational Church. He is
on the Centennial Committee
of the Church along with
Chancellor Clifford Hardin.

As a member of the facul
ty, Dr. Hough is a member
of various faculty commit
tees. His wife, a Mortar
Board and Phi Beta Kappa
in college, was past advisor
to Mortar Boards. ,
His slender, blond - haired
wife said that he really bkes
to teach. "Although some pro
fessors just prefer to do re
search, my husband likes to
do both." she added.
Fellow co-worker Dr. Rob
ert K. Knoll, professor of
English, stated that Dr.
"Bud'" Hough is very inter
ested in working with stu
dents. "His primary concern
J is his undergraduate students.
He has rejected previous or-,
fers from other institutions
in order to stay at Nebras
ka," he added.
At the moment. Dr. Hough
is in Missoula, Montana, con
sidering an invitation from
the University of Montana to
teach there.

an incident showing Hough's
wonderful ability with chil

absence, this Outstanding Ne
braskan has worked awfully
hard without much encour
agement to keep Scrip alive,
said Dr. William Hall, direc
tor of the School of Journal
ism. The 450 copies of Scrip
available for sale to the stu
dents were sold out in two
days.
Dr. Robert Cranford, pro
fessor of journalism, said
"Dr. Hough is very interested
in encouraging students to do
creative writing."

ishing an edition of the crit
ical works of Edgar Allen
Poe.
"Dr. Hough is one of t h e
very fine teachers I know
and certainly a worthy re
cipient of the award," said
Dr. Hall. "He is one of the
few individuals that opposing

he is a moderate. He is al
