The Daily Nebraskan
Carlson Repeats As 'Star'
Bv AL SPORE
Sports Staff Writer
Dwain Carlson, Husker co
captain who led Nebraska to
the finest football season in
22 years, is the Nebraskan's
Star of the Week' for his
performance in Saturday's 34
6 loss to Oklahoma.
Carlson, 6-1, 210 pound right
guard,, used his speed and
agility to hamper Sooner
backs the entire afternoon dis
playing one of his finest per
formances of the season in
the Husker defeat to earn his
second 'Star' award this year.
"They didn't outman us;
they outsmarted us," Carlson
commented looking back on
the OU frakus.'"They weren't
the best team we've met, I
thought Missouri was better,"
the Husker lineman continued.
Nebraska gave up its only
other loss to Missouri earlier
in the season.
Looking back on the suc
cessful NU s e a s o n Carlson
commented, "The season
went so fast when we were
winning I didn't really stop
to think about it. I knew we
were going to have a winning
season but I didn't think an
8-2, rather a 7-3," the Husker
co-captain continued.
that he prefered not to point
out individual players.
Coaches
"The coaches had such a
positive attitude and faith in
us it made us feel like win
ning," Carlson commented on
Bob Devanev and his staff.
"Things were so different
from last year," Carlson con
tinued, "there was more re
spect for the coaches than
last year. You can't help but
respect them (NU coaching
staff)."
Carlson also had praise for
the Husker coaches' organiza
tion and amount of work they
put into planning and elimin
a t i n g mental errors. "We
didn't have to hit all week
to find out who was going to
play on Saturday," the Ne
braskan 'Star' stated giving
the coaches credit for the bet
ter practices the Husker
squad enjoyed this year.
Eyeing the Husker future
Carlson asserted, "the frosh
is the best I've seen, next
years linemen should be good
although there could be some
lack of depth." he continued.
As for his own future, Carl
son was a bit u n c e r t a i n.
"Some of the coaches have
been trying to get me into
Carlson hd praise for the pro ball but I'm not sure I
Nebraska players stating,
"there were a lot of guys
who didn't play last year but
have the size." Carlson com

Return
Only three lettermen return
to Coach Bob Mancusco's
wrestling team this year
which opens its season m Ter
re Haute, Ind., Saturday.
Last year's team finished
with a 9-2-1 record in dual
meets and finished fourth in
the Big Eight meet and ninth
in the N.C.A.A. meet.
But on that squad were the
likes of Dave Cook, Jim Fai
mon, Gordon Chipman, Dan
Hoevett, Harold Thompson
and Jim Kaschke.
Thompson and Raschke
were undefeated in dual com
petition last season and also
won their divisions in the Big
Eight tournament.
Returning lettermen include
Dick Vansickle, 130 pounds;
Den Fox, 177 Dounder and
Mike Nissen, 123 pounds.
Nissen will captain the
squad and will be trying for
his third season of dual com
petition without a loss. He
suffered two losses last year
one in the finals of the
Big Eight meet and the other
in the semi-finals of the
N.C.A.A.
Much of the grappler hopes
are riding on Mike this sea
son as this year's squad will
be young and inexperienced,
but Coach Mancusco f e e Is
some seasoning three soph
omore prospects may develop
as the year progresses.
All three are former Ne
braska StJrte High School
champs. They are Steve Wal
enz. 117 pounds; Charles
Clatterbuck, 147 pounder and
Mike Tillotson, 167 pounds.

PERSONAL
Things have kind of quiefed down since the Huskers
closed out their fabulous football season with a sur
prising 8-2 record.
My predicting system picked the boys from Okla
homa for the fifth spot. I have to hand it to Bud Wilkin
son for shaping those sophomores into a championship
club.
If the Huskers' loss to the Sooners seems disappoint
ing to a few, it shouldn't. Nebraska lost the ones that
it was supposed to and won a few that everybody thought
it wouldn't (Michigan, Kansas and Iowa State, for in
stance). A bigger hand should go to Coach Bob Devaney, his
assistants, the football players, and Athletic Director Tip
py Dye for taking Nebraska football out of the run-of-the-mill
category.
No bowl offers yet according to Coach Devaney. "If
we are eiven a bowl bid. it will depend
on the bowl if we go or not," the NU
mentor, said.
Basketball nowt takes the spotlight
in Nebraska's climb in athletics.
The only thing is: the cagers don't
look as if they are going to do much
climbing.
Judging from Tuesday night's en
counter with the freshmen, the varsity
is going to have to improve quite a bit
before they make any kind of a stand
in the conference race this winter.
Daryl Petsch and Ivan Grupe are taking up where
they left off last season with consistent performances.
Petsch has improved in his board work which will
be a big help since Tom Russell and Bill Bowers are gone.
Charlie Jones will also be a big help this season as
he appears to be one of the best all-around players on
the team.
Rut the kev to the success will be the play of Bill
Vincent. The Chief will try to fill the shoes of Russell
this fall and must improve his rebounding for the Huskers
to be any kind of a threat.
In any case the Huskers aren't going to pull off a
big improvement show like the football team did, but
it shouldn't be expected either.
Congratulations to Bill (Thunder) Thornton for being
picked on the Ail-American squad. A great three years
for the Thunder Man.
