The Twist first gained in popularity last spring on the East and West coasts, but did not reach the Uni versity until this fall. University students who worked in resort areas this past summer are mainly responsible for the fad being brought to the campus. The Twist, a very simple dance, consists of bending Tjrjp i" hi i 1 Jj vi III i rS,ipto,-. backward and forward or from side to side, while mov ing the hips in rhythm to the music. It is not a dance for serious people, but is rather for the fun-loving student who prefers not to concentrate on " what he is doing while dancing. Although the Twist has often been compared to a primitive jungle dance by members of the older genera tion, it is in reality no more suggestive than the dances made popular by their own generation. - The Twist may also be called the condensed result of such dances as the Charleston, Shimmy, Black Bot tom, and the Big Apple, which also contain the move ments which are now deemed as suggestive, obscene, primitive, and other adjectives of a similar nature. Some University students feel that the Twist is popu lar only because of the great extent to which it has been publicized, while still others feel that it is the result of laziness of our own generation. It may be called a great exercise, especially reduc ing, by those students who actively partake in the dance. Although the dance holds a place of high popularity among students, most of them thought t! at it will prob ably die out soon, because it hit so hard and fast. It is also felt that if the Twist doesn't go soon the students will! The Twist was the highlight of the numerous house parties this past semester, and will probably continue in its popularity as a dance that is both easy and fun to do. In spite of the number of injuries "Twisters" have incurred on other campuses, it has not had the same result on this campus. If you want to twist, go ahead! But take care, or you may be the one who has to sit on the sidelines for at least a month and watch the other "Twisters" twist.
