Huskers Meet K-State in Big Eight Tourney; NU Has Never Finished Higher Than Third By Bob Prokop The Big Eight basketball firing line gets underway at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 27, when the Huskers take on the Wildcats from Kansas State in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. This game features the win ningest club in this pre-sea-son tournament vs. the cel lar dwellers. The pre-season tournament of the Big Eight conference teams started in 1946 when Southern Methodist University copped the crown and has since been won by Big Eight teams, Kansas University and Kansas State, both winning the trophy four times. The team to beat this year, according to NU Coach Jerry Bush, is Kansas State with the Colorado Buffalos close behind. The tournament prom ises to be one of the closest events held in the Big Eight conference this year. The eight coaches in session at Kansas City for their an nual clinic declared to the press: "From top to bottom the teams of our conference will be as good or better than last year. In every instance, with the possible exception of Kansas, the teams will be stronger than last year." Five Take Titles Over the past ten years, only five tournamftit winners have gone on to win clear cut championships in the league race with Kansas, the 1953 winner, sharing the crown in the 1953-54 confer ence race. In the 1949-1950 conference race, the crown was shared by Kansas, Kansas State, and Nebraska. In the pre-season tournament that year, Kan sas State finished third, Kan sas, sixth, and Nebraska, sev enth. Probably the most fabulous player ever to play in the Big Eight, Kansas' Wilt Chamber lain, holds numerous records in this classic. He scored 45 points in one game, 106 points in three games, and holds field goal record of 18 in one game and 40 in a tournament. Chamberlain also has the dis tinction of missing the most tree rnrows in a game and a tournament. 12 and 27. Lovellette Tops Scorers Another familiar name in the annals of basketball play ers, Clyde Lovellette, scored 222 points in all the meets that he participated in. Bob Boozer, transplanted Omahan who played for Kansas State, scored 16 free throws in one game, 40 for a tourney, arid 49 in his career during the Big Eight tournament for rec ords. Five players fouled out of every game during a tourna ment but the most unusual mark held in this field be longs to Jack Friostad of Col orado who fouled out of a game against Iowa State In 43 seconds. Wilky Gilmore, guard from Colorado and Gary Wheeler, Iowa State, and the only re turning members of the top ten scorers of last year. Wilky had a 20.3 average with 61 points while Wheeler had a 16.0 average and 48 points. The Huskers top scorer last year, Jim Kowalke, 14.3, graduated. Another Husker, Herschell Turner, scored 161 points in a three year period of the tournament, to rank ninth in the All-Time standings. DAILY HEBRASKAH i Husker Mat Men Win 20-6 Victory 4 By Bob Besom Husker mat men won six of eight bouts Monday night on route to a 20-6 victory over Adams State. Two Husker reliables had to come from behind for wins. Mike Nissen and Harold Thompson both spotted opponents takedowns before they made their moves. Dick Van Sickle started Ne braska on its winning ways as he breezed through the 123 pound contest, 8-1. And heavy weight Jim Raschke finished the evening with the only fall It was dual win number two for Coach Bob Mancuso's grapplers. The season record is 2-0-1. Mancuso is taking the freshman-varsity squads -to the Midwest AAU Tournament in Omaha today. Weigh-ins are this afternoon while the pre liminaries are billed for 7 to night. Wyoming has won four and lost one this year, suffering its only setback against Wichita 78-54.
