M$zce SHU tTO M NU Stopped Cold By Powerful Buffs Coach: We Couldn't Move Ball By Dave Wohlfarth The Nebraska Cornhuskers will try to beat Oklahoma for the third straight yeaf Satur day and end a disappointing season with a victory. . Coach Bill Jennings' Husk ers lost their sixth game of the year and fourth confer ence game as they bowed to the powerful Buffaloes of Colorado 7-0 Saturday at Me morial Stadium. The game, which attracted 26,000 fans, was played on a muddy, snowy turf following heavy snows during the week. Colorado, the undefeated league leader and heavily fa vored in the game, fought off the fired-up Huskers and completely dominated the game although only able to score one touchdown. CU Defense Tough The Buff defense was su perb, limiting the Husker of fense to no first downs the entire game and keeping the Scarlet in their own territory all afternoon. The Huskers, meanwhile, spent most of their time try ing to contain the Golden Buf faloes' attack featuring the passing of quarterback Gale Weidner and the hard run ning of backs Loren Schwen inger and BUI Harris. Colo rado actually knocked on the NU end zone door seven times. Buff end Jerry Hillebrand tried three unsuccessful field goals; Colorado was stopped twice when it lost the ball on fumbles inside the Husker 20 and was on the Husker one yard line when the gun sounded ending the game. rumble Costly a Husker tumble set up! me Buffs only score as XU quarterback Dennis Claridge was able to punt the Huskers out of trouble on all other occasions. CU tackle Jim Perkins pounced on a fumble bv Husker Dick Callahan at the XU 11 late in the third quar ter to set op the only score of the game. From the 11 halfback Leon Mavity rumbled around left end for two yards and the Huskers were penalized back to the three for a personal foul. Schweninger hit the right side to the NU one then Weidner sneaked over for the touchdown. Hillebrand's ex tra point made it 7-0 with 2:30 left in the third period. ine nuns had threatened twice earlier in the quarter but fumble recoveries by Gary Toogood and Dick Mc Daniel had stopped the threats. The shivering fans held on till the end of the eame as the Huskers, although being pushed all over the field were always within range if they could connect on a long pars men add the PAT. I don t see how they can the day gave the Buffs an other chance. The ball went out of bounds at the NU 36 but on the second play from scrimmage, Harris fumbled and Husker tackle Monte Kif fin recovered. Colorado had only fumbled three times before the Ne braska game, and only one of those three was recovered by the opposing team. Grandelius praised Jos Romig, Jerry Hillebrand, and Gale Weidner for playing tremendous ball. Romig commented on Ne braska's size and strength and tabbed Thornton as being a tough defensive and offensive player. Colorado's right end, Hille brand, said that the weather made it difficult to move the ball, but didn't stop it from being a hard hitting game. "Don Purcell is a real fine ball player and Thornton is one of the best fullbacks I've played against this year," he said. One of the shortest state ments heard came from Walt Klinker. He summed up the game by saying, "It was wet Dennis Claridge. "Our de-land cold." SUMMER JOBS IN EARN YOUR TRIP AND EXPENSES FOR FREE INFORMATION WRITE TO: AMERICAN STUDENT INFORMATION SERVICE t. V.
