Earns Him Star of the Week Award
Junior Left End
First '61 Recipient
By Mike MacLean
Left end Jim Huge Is the
recipient of the first Daily
Nebraskan Star of The Week
award this year. Huge was
given the award for his out
standing play in Nebraska's
33-0 victory over North Da
kota. The 21-year old junior from
Madison, Wisconsin, who is
in Teachers College caught
two passes for a total of 35
yards, and displayed defen
sive prowess by recovering a
North Dakota fumble and in
tercepting a pass from" North
Dakota quarterback Bill
Glas.
Huge, who claims a letter
in football and in basketball,
missed six games last year
because of a knee injury but
is in top physical condition
this season.
Huge is vice president of
N Club, a member of Inno
cents Society, president of
Young Democrats and a
member of Phi Kappa Psi
fraternity.
He states, "Either of the
first two units is better than
any other team I have seen
here. We have some real
good quarterbacks, a fine
wide open offense, and all the j
possibilities for a great sea
son." The six-foot, 187 pound end
played his high school sports
in Holdrege. He was an All
State halfback for coach Jess
Kiefer. He was also an All
State basketball player for
two years, and held the
Southwest Conference broad
jump record.
Huge was busy last year
off the football field too. He
was a member of the All
Big Eight and all American
scholastic team, and was vot
ed the Ideal Collegiate Man.

Husker Line Scrimmages
The Nebraska line held an
offensive scrimmage yester
day in preparation for Satur
day's game with Arizona.
Coach Bill Jennings said
the Huskers would scrimmage
only the line with no secon
dary backs or tackling Tues
day. Commenting about the Ari
zona game Jennings said,
Bowling Qualifying Round
Scheduled for October 7
By Jan Sack
The qualifying round for the
Nebraska Big Eight bowling
team will be held Oct. 7,
according to bowling coach
Jim Hornby.
All male undergraduates
carrying 12 hours and jn good
standing with the University
are eligible to participate.
Top qualifiers in the semi
finals will bowl Oct. 14 against
the eight returning varsity
bowlers. The top ten finishers
inhat-freup will form the
varsity and pacer teams for
the 1961-62 campaign.
Returning varsity bowlers
are Ralph Holmstrom, Keith
Van Velkinburgh, Steve
Lovell, Dick Babst, Dick
Haase, Matt Brown, Stuart
KuUer and Vic Bejot.
Last year the team won
three crowns: the Nebraska
State Championship, the Big
Eight Conference and the
Rocky Mountain Intercollegi
ate Bowling Conference. In
addition, the bowlers finished
third in the nation among
college teams.
Nebraska's match play rec
ord for last season was M,
the only loss coming at the
hands of North Dakota by
seven pins for three games.
The team scored victories
over Omaha University; Kan
sas State and Kansas Untverr
sity, each twice; Seward Con
cordia; Lincoln All -Stan;
Iowa State and Kansas City
University.
"Nebraska will have a good
chance to repeat and should
surpass last year's record if
enough bowlers turn out for
the semi ..finals on Oct-7,"
Hornby said.
Opening match of the sea
son will be on Oct. 28
against Missouri at Columbia.
"We must play the best de
fensive "game we've played,
both ground and pass wise."
He pointed out at the Tues
day press conference that the
Wildcats completed five of
seven passes in their opening
game, a 28-6 win over Colo
rado State. They completed
five passes good for 212 yards
while piling up 403 total
yards offense.
Jennings said he expected
a "wide pen game" Satur
day and that Nebraska's num
ber one problem would be
keeping Arizona in check.
Injury-wise, the Huskers are
still in good shape and should
again be at near top strength
in their second game of the
season. Only Huskers out for
sure are Pat Salerno and
Noel Martin, both still recov
ering from knee injuries.
NIT linemen ' Micfc ' Tingle
hoff and Bob Jones suited up
Tuesday and should be ready
Saturday. Duncan Drum still
has a Charley horse and guard
Ed Mitchell has a bad arch
and may see only limited
duty.

Kansas State, the Huskers'
Oct. 7 opponent, play the Air
Force Academy at Manhat
tan, Jennings reported.
