Halfback Dennis S t u e w e DAILY CIBRASKM Big Eight Roundup IS-Cowboy Battle Tops Big 8 Weekend Big Eight football fans should find plenty of thrills Saturday when Iowa State matches skills with Oklahoma State. The Cyclones, who were far from impressive in their 21-0 victory over Drake last Sat urday, promised a sharp comeback this week. "A victory will be ex tremely important in our scheme of things," Iowa State Coach Clay Stapleton ad mitted. "Cliff Speegle of Ok lahoma State will have the same attitude. We can expect a hard fought, low scoring, close game here this wek end." Since this will be the first conference game till Sept. 30 the victor Saturday will be the first to hold the top Big Eight position. Tailback Ozzie Clay was the Cyclones' leading ground gainer against Drake piling up 81 yards in 14 carries for a 5.8 yards per carry aver age. Highly touted Dave Hopp man carried 18 times, gained 68 yards and lost eight for a 3.7 average in the IS opener. The Cyclones have only three regulars and 16 letter men back from a team that won seven and lost three last year. Eighteen lettermen are back at Oklahoma State this year but injuries this fall have cost the Cowboys some key personnel, including quar terback Jim Elliot who scored the winning touchdown against Nebraska last year. Coach Speegle has been disappointed in early OSU scrimmages by the lack of a tough defense, usually a Cow boy trademark. He has been impressed by the improved passing attack. Last year Iowa State, with Tom Watkins leading the way, defeated Oklahoma State 13-6 at Stillwater. A crowd of about 18,000 i expected for this year's battle at Ames. Elsewhere around the Big Eight, pre-season favorite Kansas opens at Texas Chris tian Saturday night, Kansas State hosts Indiana, Nebras ka plays North Dakota and Missouri will meet Washing ton State at Columbia. Oklahoma and Colorado are idle this week and will begin play Sept. 30. Colorado meets Oklahoma State at Boulder and Oklahoma has. an intersectional battle at Notre Dame on that date.
