The two teams will clash In a doubleheader at 1:30 to day and meet in a single game at 11 a.m. Saturday. The early starting time for Saturday's contest was ar ranged to avoid conflict with the finals of the State High School Track Meet. Kansai State Is in third place in the Big Eight with an 8-9 record while Coach Tony Sharpe's Huskers are fifth at 6-9. Nebraska has an 8-12 mark overall. Nebraska can move into third place with three wins over the Wildcats coupled with two losses by Colorado to Iowa State. If Nebraska wins three, the Huskers will be 9-9 and two Buffalo losses would leave Colorado with an 8-10 record. The Huskers can also fin ish in any of the other spots between third and seventh, but there -is no possible com bination of wins and losses that would put Nebraska in the cellar. OSU Clinches Flag Oklahoma State has sewed up the conference flag with a 16-0 mark and the Cowboys will be trying to keep their unbeaten string intact with a three-game set against Mm souri this weekend at Still water. The Tigers are in second place with a 12-4 mark and no other team can unseat them, The Tigers and Cow boys are the only teams playing .500 ball in the con ference. In other conference games this weekend Kansas will be at Oklahoma and Iowa State is at Colorado. Sharpe was still undecided on his starting hurlers Thurs day, but he has four pitchers with sub-4.00 ERAs to choose from, Ernie Bonistall, sopho more righthander, has the top ERA mark at 2.87. Tom Ernst with 3.29, Ron Have kost at 3.66 and Jan Wall at 3.72 follow Bonistall. Wall lowered his ERA mark from 4.75 with three outstand ing re ief performances against Oklahoma last week end. In Big Eight action, Smith is hitting .394, Harris has a .385 mark and Rex Swett boasts .321 conference record. Swett is hitting .264 for the season. By Jan Sack Nebraska enters the strongest team in several years in the Big Eight outdoor conference in Boulder, Colo., today and tomorrow. The Huskers, even with a 4-0 record for the season, will have to move over a bit for the powerhouses of Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Nebraska's blue ribbon hopes are pinned on Al Roots in the javelin and Al Wellman in the discus and shot put. Roots' chances are bolstered by his 241-1 cast which ranks him second in the nation among collegians. His main competition will come in the form of Colorado's Dick Clark who ranks fourth with a toss of 235-0. Wellman's competition will be tough even with the 54-8 mark he holds. The big Husker ranks third in the Big Eight topped by Mike Lindsay of Oklahoma who has a toss of 58-1034 and Don Smith of Missouri who has a 57-7 heave. In the discus Wellman has a toss of 164-10 which ranks him second in the Big Eight. He is outclassed by Lindsay who owns a 170-5 mark. Walt Meyers, Oklahoma, could also be tough with his mark of 161-3. Stevens Challenges Slender soph Ray Stevens could provide a real challenge to Bill Dotson of Kansas and Bob Hanneken of Missouri in the mile. Stevens was clocked in 4:11.3 against one of the top milers in the nation. Hanneken's mark is 4:08.3 with Dotson's being a 4:08.9. Paul Ebert .Oklahoma, and Ray Schmitz, Missouri, can also be counted on to make the race a tough one. Two other top Husker sophomores, Steve Pfister and Fred Wilke, could bring in needed points. Pfister has a 100-yard dash time of :09.7 and a 220 mark of :21.8. His competition will be rough with Larry Mc Cue, Kansas; Mark Sullivan and Dick Sin clair, Oklahoma; and Dave Butts of Mis souri all being clocked in :09.7. In the 220 Pfister's competition will be Jim Heath of Colorado, Jim Baker and Dave Butts of Missouri. Charlie Strong of Oklahoma State and Dick Dorsey of Okla homa can be counted on to make the race tight. Hurdler Wilke will join forces with team mate Bill Fasano in the high hurdles. Fa sano posted a :14.2 which ranks him third in the Big Eight. Rex Stucker of Kansas State won the hurdles last year and has a mark of :14.0. Teammate Jerry Hooker follows close behind with a :14.1. Wilke ties for fourth with a :14.4. In the low hurdles Wilke's time is :24.1. In this event Stucker, Terry Covert of Oklahoma State and Mark Sullivan of Oklahoma will dominate. They have times of :23.3, :23.5 and :23.6 respectively. PoIeVaulters Nebraska's other points should com in the pole vault. Jim Kraft recently vaulted 14-3, the best of his career and this bol sters his chance against J. D. Martin of Oklahoma and George Davies of Oklahoma State. Davies currently has the top mark with a 15-6 with Martin second with a 15-3. Nebraska's other chance at gaining points may come in the broad jump with Bob Knaub. Knaub has a 23-llVi mark. The top man in this event is Don Meyers, Colorado, has a 24-5 jump just ahead of Steve Swafford of Oklahoma who was marked at 25-5Y4. The 440 could shape up to be a real bat tle between Jim Baker of Missouri and Heath. Baker has been clocked la t46.t with Heath's time a :47.0. Gordon Davis of Kansas will provide plenty of competi tion with his best mark of :47.2. LeRoy Keane and Dick Hoelscher are the Nebras ka entries. Kirk Hagen of Kansas has the best 880 mark in the conference with a 1:50.9. Jerry McFadden, Missouri, and Billy Stone, Oklahoma State, will provide top competition with times of 1:52.0 and 1:53.3. Nebraska's entries are Bill Kenny and Clarence Scott both timed in 1:55.7. High jumpers Mark Brady, Oklahoma, and Sammy Pegues, Oklahoma State, will battle for the top spot. Brady's top mark is 6-8 compared with 6-6 for Pegues. Don Blakely, Oklahoma State, and Larry Eilert, Iowa State .cannot be counted out for both boys have 6-6 jumps. Top Two-Milers Top men in the two-mile event are Billy Mills of Kansas and Bob Hanneken of Missouri. Mills' time thus far is 9:03.1 compared with Hanneken's 9:06.0. Husker Paul Nielsen will compete against them. Oklahoma seems to be the top 440-relay team with a :41.6 followed cloesly by Kan sas and Missouri. Oklahoma State leads the mile relay event with a 3:10.6. Mis rouri and Kansas also have top teams. Jim Huge to Receive Pop Warner Award Jim Huge, Cornhusker end, who was named to the Pop Warner All American team, will be presented the plaque during the Nebraska high school track championships this weekend.
