STARTING SHOT
Bill Bowers, 6-5 junior, will be getting his first starting
assignment as a Husker when Denver invades the Coliseum
tonight for an 8:05 encounter. Bowers rebounding was a
vital factor in the Huskers upset win over seventh-ranked
Utah State a week ago.

lineup. The Pioneers lost four
of five starters via gradua
tion and another, Bob Moe, is
sidelined for the season with
a severe back injury.
Winning Mark
Denver compiled a 13-11
season mark and an 8-6 rec
ord in the Skyline conference
last season. The Pioneers and
Utah are the only teams in
the conference to have win
ning records in each of the
last four seasons.
The leading returning scor
er is 6-7 center Bob Grinstead
who will be starting at the
pivot. Grinstead averaged 11.6
points per game as a sopho
more and 10.1 last year as
a junior. He was sidelined
with a broken ankle for all
but 11 games last year.
The backcourt will be in the
hands of two sophomores,.
Dennis Hodge (6-0) and Gary'
Baxstrom (6-2). Hodge led the
frosh scoring last season with
a 14.7 average including one
39-point output against Colo
rado State University.
Baxstrom is a good outside
shooter and one of the top
defensive players on the
team. A senior, Tom Hollis,
is also expected to see con
siderable action at guard.
One of the forward spots
will go to sophomore T i m
Vezie (6-4Vi) with the other
starting assignment up for
grabs.
Rick Barrett, a 6-4 junior.
probably, will get. the call, but
he is being challenged by 6-6
sophomore Bill Mumma, and
6-4 junior Bill Saunders.
Mumma, who played his
freshman ball at Marquette
before transferring to Den
ver, may see action at cen
ter also. ,
Tonight's contest ends
a four-game Husker home
stand. Nebraska will be at
Detroit Saturday, and at Cin

Purcell Top Lineman
Nebraska end Don Purcell
tied with Carl Kemmerer of
College of the Pacific in Iowa
State's voting for "best oppos
ing lineman."
Purcell was the only Husker
named to the Cyclones all
opponent team, .
' Nebraska fans, who attend tomorrow night's wrest-
ling match between Nebraska and Adams State Col
lege, could see the Huskers ' win their first wrestling
match since Feb. 12, 1959.
Coach Mickey Sparano has done. a remarkable job
i Jn the two jmonths since practice started and there is no
i resemblance between Husker mat teams of
the past few years and this year's squad.
. Sparahii started ; the uphill climb by at
tracting more than 50 prospects to the
opening practice session.
"When I took the coaching post here,
people told me that there was no interest
in wrestling oh this campus," Sparano
says. "But the' number of bflys who showed
up for practice has shown that students
here are interested in wrestling."
Wrestlers from Nebraska were the
main topic of conversation at the AAU Brown
Invitational Tourney in Cedar Falls, la., recently. The
large number of wrestlers from Nebraska shocked wrest
ling fans In that area because in past years, Nebraska's
wrestlers could travel in one car.
i , -A distinct change, is evident when you consider that
i this year there is competition for positions, whereas in past
i years, , Nebraska had to forfeit two to three matches be
cause of a lack of wrestlers. A student trainer was even
forced into action two years ago.
; ; Jl Nissen Beats Top Two
,. ' "Jhe Husker matmen have been Impressive, generally,
in early 'performances. Mike Nissen, a small stick of dy
namite, already has defeated the champion and runner
up in the Big Sight tournament last year. Nissen pinned
Iowa State's Don Webster, the runnerup, and decisioned
Kansas , State's John Dooley, the champion.
Nebraska's 16-10 defeat by Kansas State Saturday was
closer than the score indicates and a single point in one
of the two tie matches could have turned the tide.
The two tie matches involved Nebraska's Bert Peter
son and Kansas State's Joe Seay in the 147-pound class,
and Pat Fitzgerald of Nebraska against Charles Kelly of
Kansas State in the 177-pound division. A single point by
the Husker grappler in either match would have made the
score 11-all going into the final match instead of "13-10 In
favor of Kansas State.
If the score ihad been tied, then all Nebraska heavy
weight Jim Raschke would have needed was a win over
Wildcat Don Darter. But with the Huskers trailing by
three points, Raschke had to win for a tie and he needed
to score a pin for a Husker victory. This put all the pres
sure on the Husker heavyweight and' all Darter had to
do was stay even with Raschke.
Sparano made the decision to go for the win rather
than a tie and Raschke threw caution to the winds in an
attempt to pin his opponent. Raschke was defeated, 5-2.
The decision to go for the win instead of a tie should
have come as no surprise to those who are acquainted with
Sparano's livewire manner of doing business. Georgia
Tech football coach Bobby Dodd once said, in explaining
why he had tried for a winning touchdown rather than a
. tying field goal, "A tie game is like kissing your sister."
. A win tomorrow night would break a dual match los
ing streak of 16 with the last win coming against Fort
Hays College Feb. 12, 1959. The Huskers tied South Da
kota State eight days later and then lost the next two
matches that season. Nebraska lost all 13 dual matches
last season and Saturday's loss extended the string to 16
straight.
