The two Nebraska losses stretched their losing string to 10 games and dropped the Huskers into seventh place, only two games ahead of the cellar-dwelling Wild cats. The only conference wins for the Huskers came at the expense of Kansas State in the opening series of conference action. Nebraska trails sixth place Kansas by only one-half game and the Jayhawks come to Lincoln Friday and Saturday for a three-game series that will decide sixth place in the standings. Less Defeats Oklahoma State and Iowa State are even in the win column but the Cyclones have lost two more games than the Cowboys. Iowa State divided a doubleheader with Kansas State Saturday with the Cyclones winning the opener 2-0 but dropping the nightcapt 6-5. The Kansas State victory in the second game was the first conference victory of the season for the Wildcats. Missouri and Oklahoma virtually eliminated each other from the race with a twinbill split. Colorado is heading the second' division with a 6-6 mark after losing two of three to Kansas. The Nebraska team pre sents an nnnsual situation with ten players hitting over .300 but the Huskers have lost ten in a row. Actually there are eleven over the .300 mark but one of them, Larry Isaacson, has dropped from the team. Leading the Nebraska reg ulars is catcher Ely Church ich with a .351 average. Oth ers hitting over .300 are Tom Redmond (.500), Dick Becher (.329), Ken Rusinger (.333), Ron Cougill (.333), Harry Tolly (.333), Dick Nel son (.324), Don Vogel (.308), LeRoy Zentic (.302) and Don PurceU (.300). Two of the players topping the .300 mark weren't includ ed on last week's traveling squad to Oklahoma State. They were Dick Nelson and Don Vogel and another, Dick Becher, saw only limited ac tion. Jerry Harris continues to lead the team in runs bat ted in with 17 followed by Phil Barth with -14. Barth also leads the Huskers with five home runs and in strike outs with 17. Don Purcell heads the Husker mound corps with a 4.24 earned run average and a 1-0 won-lost mark. Jan Wall is the top winner with three wins against four losses. His 37 strikeouts also leads the Nebraska hurlers. Hall was voted most valuable member of the 1960 N.U. gymnastics team by his teammates, ac cording to Coach Jake Geier. Hall was the leading scorer for the gymnastic team this year until he was barred from further competition with a shoulder injury. For his-'efforts he was honored as a Star of the Week by the Daily Ne braskan during the past sea son. The Beatrice senior was a co-captain of the 1960 team and is the seventh athlete to win this.. distinction Qther, winners were Tom Kidd, 1953; Max Kennedy, 1954; Bruce Ri ley, 1955-'56; Wayne Stick ler , 1957; Robert MacDonald, 1958 and Charles Ellis, 1959. Hall's name will be placed on the plaque that hangs in the Physical Education Build ing. This annual award is based on skill, cooperation and lead ership. NV Bottlers Given Trophy A 30-inch trophy has been awarded to the University of Nebraska Big Eight bowling team by Osloff's Sporting Goods of Omaha. The trophy was given to the N.U. team for their victory in the first Annual Collegiate Bowling tournament to be held at the University. Delta Sigs Win Campus Tourney Campus handicap bowling tournaments were completed the past weekend with new champions crowned in single, double and team divisions. Boh Peterson won first place honors in the men's di vision with a 636 score. The runner-up was Bob Moore with a 621 total games score. Connie Stadler and Sharon Dedrick finished 1-2 in the w"nen'e p'nPles division with 5f3 and 521 scores respec tively. In doubles competition Phil Schenck and Rich Watkins won the men's division, while ; Connie Stradler teamed with Carmen Hill to cop the wom en's division -with a 951 score. Delta Sigma Pi won the men's team division with a standing score of 2776. There was no women's team cham pion as there was only one team entered. The Huskers will be seeking their first conference' victory. The NU netters have been defeated by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas. The Huskers have won seven and lost eight with two meets remaining before the Conference Meet May 20-21. Saturday the Huskers . host Iowa State at the NU Courts.' Making the trip to K-State will be Al Arrigunaga, Stan Kruschwitz, Bill Kendall, Dave Calhoun and Jack Craft. Four IM Softball reams Eliminated Four teams were elimi nated in Monday's Intramur al Softball 'action. Delta Up silon dumped Phi Kappa Psi 13-4, Brown Palace ousted Farm House 14-7, Goodding defeated Hitchcock by forfeit and the Jr. Dents knocked off the Physicists 6-3. The wins enabled the DU's, Brown Palace, Goodding and Jr. Dents to move up in their respective divisions in t h e double-elimination tourney. Four teams, Alpha Tau Omega, Pioneer, Manatt and the Pathogens, are in the fi nals, of the four divisions. If bad weather arrives, these four squads will be declared division champs and play for the All-University title. Today's schedule has three games slated for the Ag field. The Deadline for nomina tion entries has been set at 5 p.m. May 17. Thp winners will be an nounced in the May 20 edition of the Daily Nebraskan. The Outstanding Varsity Athlete award incldes a tro phy presented by the Daily Nebraskan. The winner's name will also be engraved on a plaque which is kept in the N club room at the Coli seum. Turner Picked . - Herschell Turner received the award last year for his outsanding ability jn basket ball and track. Turner was chosen over such stars as Joe Mullins, Dick McCashland, Bfll North, Ken Pollard, George Harsh man, Bob Harry, Karl Byers and Larry Naviaux. The award was started by Bruce Brugmann in the spring of 1955. The first to receive the award was Bruce Riley, Nebraska's fine all around gymnast. The award wasn't given in 1956, but was revived by Bob Martel in 1957 when Rex Ekwall. NU basketball star, received the award. Keith Gardner, Ne braska's sprinting ace, won the award in 1958. Varsity Athletes Eligible Any Varsity athlete who is presently enrolled and still competing is eligible for the award. Any University stu dent may make nominations. The Outstanding Intramu ral Athlete award will also be presented at the Daily Ne braskan Awards Luncheon, May 20. Last year this award was given to Wally Bryans. All nominations should he sent to Sports Editor Daily Nebraskan Room 20 Student Union Students Can Win In Jack Pot Bowl A special bonus to campus howlers started Monday at the Student Union with the Blind Score Jack Pot. The Jack Pot will be open to any bowler in the Nebraska Union and will run through closing time Sunday evening. A nickle is charged for any three games bowled in the Union. Five mythical scores have been picked by games director Merle Rieling and have been locked in a safe. At the end of the contest, a person having an identical Bcore as one of the pre-deter-mined scores will be given a bowling pass.
