The varsity tracksters, bolstering a season record of 3-1, havo VinnrieH in snme nrpttv lmnressive times --! ' and distances, namely in the 600-yard and 1,000-yard vents. The man responsible for trimming both of these is Joe Mullins, cur rent captain of the cindermen. When Mullins came to the University, he was acclaimed as one of the greatest in dividual track men to hit this campus. During that same period of time another fleet footed fellow was attending the Uni versity. During his college career he posted some of the best times in the sprints that have ever been etched in the record books at Nebraska. Although Keith Gardner is through competing for Ne braska, he still carrier the college banner, running in na tion-wide events, such as the Bostrn AA games two weeks ago. Each year track coach Franu Sevigne comes up with some of the best track talent in the nation. This year's freshman team has representatives from eight states, including six boys from Nebraska. In the NU-OSU postal meet Ernest Gunter, a sprinter from Philadelphia, Pa. opened his college career with an impressive showing. Gunter picked up three blue ribbons in the 60-yard sprints. ran on the winning mile relay team and finished second in the 440. In one event Gunter cut the existing conference record by one-tenth of a second. Gunter posted a time of :06.8 in the 60-yard low hurdles, bettering the mark set by Gardner, Bob Derrick of Oklahoma and Charlie Tidwell and Ernie Shelby, both of KU. Comparing Gunter's time to the best varsity time, turned in by Nebraska in competition this season, it is noted that Ernest's time would have enabled him to win this event in any of the three home contests the Huskers had participated in this season. The story is the same in the high hurdles, the 60-yard dash and the 440. In each of these events, if Gunter would have been competing for Nebraska's varsity team he would have won the events. All totaled, using the times entered bv Gunter in these four events, he would have set 10 meet records In the three home meets this season. His low hurdle time also ties the Nebraska stadium indoor record. Using his times for comparison with the winning times entered in last week's Colorado dual at Boulder, Gunter would have been able to win the three 60-yard events, but would have been beaten by Colorado's flashy sophomore Teddy Wilson, who won the event with a :48.9 time. Coach Sevigne sums up Gunter's appearance in the postal The mile relay team, comprised of Gunter, Fred Wilke, jasper tpps, ana urn Kenny are also noteworthy in this com parison. Although the Husker varsity mile relay team has never participated in competition, the freshmen's time of 3:25.1 would be hard to beat. This time posted by the Husker year lings also betters the existing records in each of the three home meets, and is only one-tenth of a second over the sta dium record set by Kansas State in 1958. out Kappa Sigma, the top rat ed fraternity squad. With the tournament firing scheduled today, Hitchcock may be hard pressed to defend their Sel leck supremacy over Avery. Avery storms into the rat ings with a season mark of five straight wins including four by 20 point margins. A one point decision over Mac- Lean keeps the Averyites from a higher spot. Avery guns include Rich Rosier, a sharpshooter from the out side, and Roger Brede anoth er footballer who provides Re bounding strength. A tough Alpha Tau Ome ga outfit moves Into the first division at the number five post after beating last year's fraternity champ, Sigma No. The Tau's appear certain to give Kappa Sigma their first real test in the fraternity bracket. Sigma Nu holds onto the seventh spot with a 4-2 mark. The gold and black suffered from an early season loss ad ministered by unrated Theta Xi. The Phi Psis, unbeaten small house Sigma Alpha Ma, and Beta Theta Pi round out the ratings. The Beta's, led by Bill Kendall and Larry Romjue, earn the tenth spot after beating the Phi Psi's 41-39 in an overtime donny brook.
