Stocker . . . Record on the way
Swimmer Joe Stocker
Is Star of the Week
By Norm Beatty
A record setter in his
own right is swimmer Joe
Stocker, this week's Star of
the Week.
The 6-1 junior, who spe
cializes in the 200 yard
breastroke, toured the dis
tance in 2.34.4, 2.4 seconds
under the old record, last
week against Kansas U.
Stocker had just set the
2.36.8 mark a week earlier
against Kansas State.
The 20-year-old pre-mcd
student said he felt that Ne
braska's biggest weakness
was in the sprint freestyl
ers. Stocker plays the role of
an iron man as he com
petes in three events. In ad
dition to his 200 yard brest
stroke, tocker displays
his talents on the 400-yard
medley relay team and in
the 100 yard freestyle. His
best time in the latter event
is 1.00.

spot in the first Daily Ne

ball ratings.
The Phi Psi crew, led by
an aggressive bunch of ex
prep stars, has bowled over
three straight opponents and
taken another win by forfeit.
Top man for the Phi Psis so
far has been Chuck Stacy, an
all intramural football pick.
PEK Second
Phi Epsilon Kappa, nation
al physical education honor
ary, has drawn on the talents
of Ken "S p o o k" Ruisinger,
Lowell Schuman and LeRoy
Z e n t i c to produce three
straight victories. The PEK's
look most likely to fall heir
to the independent crown held
by the Chemists for the last
four years.
The Daily Nebraskan
choice for third is Kappa
Sigma, a tall, aggres
sive team led by four time
all intramural choice Bob
Prokop. The 67" Prokop gets
able assistance from Al Well
man and "Long John" Bar
ties. Currently the Kappa
Sigs are the winningest IM
team, taking four on the court
and one via forfeit.
Alpha Tau Omega, gunned
by perennial IM star Bob
Brandes, romps into fourth
place.
Law College rounds out the
first division. The lawyers
match height with a good
passing attack to pose the
most potent threat to PEK
among the independents.
Dick Huebner, Jim Schmidt
and Don Treadway are the
standouts.

Missouri, r touted as a Big

preholiday showing, came off
a five game losing streak to
bounce Nebraska's hapless
Cornhusk'ers in Columbia
Monday night, 69-61.
Nebraska took their luth
loss in the last 11 games the
hard way, stumbling after
managing a 34-34 halftime
tie. But the Huskers hustled
back to press 61-63 on a pair
of late fielders by Jim Ko
walke. Two fouls by sophomore
Rex Swett gave the Tigers
the chance to take. the pres
sure off at the foul line be
fore veteran Missouri for
ward Charles Henke iced the
win with his eighth fielder of
the evening.
Kowalke High
Henke and Joe Scott, a pair
of senior deadeyes, led Mis
souri with 19 and 17 re

game honors for Nebraska
with 23 aided by Herschell
Turner's 17.
Nebraska will try to hit the
win column Saturday against
Colorado at Boulder. The
Buffs tuned up for Coach
Jerry Bush's crew by bounc

first win for Colorado in three
Big Eight encounters.
It was a night for upsets.
Iowa State, preseason tour

writers' pick for the confer
ence crown dropped its first
in loop action to Oklahoma,
65-47. -
Hit 50
Oklahoma, expected to
make a strong bid for the
title themselves, hit 50 from
the floor to ease the way.
Iowa State's touted sopho
more, Vinnie Brewer was
held to eight points, his sea
son's low.
In the other Big Eight con
test Monday, Kansas State,
last year's champ with a 14
0 mark got another leg up
on a repeat crown. The Wild
cats, who have steadied aft
er early season rough sled
ding, clawed Oklahoma State,
54-49. It was the Cats third
straight and left them
the only unbeaten conference
squad. High scorer for K
State was Ced Price, e'e
football end who has appar
ently recovered from a dislo
cated shoulder.
