K-State Pulls Surprise
Huskers Even Up Statistics But Can't
Match Kansas Stale Scoring Drives
By Charles Coffin
Some 39,000 Band Day spec
tators, told by the experts to
expect a nip-'n-tuck battle all
the way in Saturday's Nebras-ka-K-State
contest, went home
a little disillusioned. The injury-ridden
Wildcats, refusing
to lose heart after two close
losses to Colorado and Utah
State, whipped the Huskers
23-6.
Both teams are now 1-1 in
the Big Eight.
W h a' hopponed? Winning
coach Bus Mertes of Kansas
State offered this explanation:
"That first touchdown
(scored on an 80-yard drive
five minutes after the kickoff)
gr.ve us a big lift. And we had
tome real hard running on our
team. Mainly, what did it was
the same thing that's been
winning for Nebraska a lot
of heart."
Mertes was also generous
In praising the losers. "Ne
braska has a hell of a hard
running club," he said, "and
they gave us fits with their
defense in the second period."
There wre two moments
during the game when it
least come close.
The first was right after K
State's first score, when Ne
braska, with backs Carroll Za
ruba and Larry Naviaux tak
ing the ball downfield in giant
leaps, barreled to a first down
on the Wildcat nine. Here a
new platoon of Huskers was
sent in and promptly fined
five yards for backfield-in-mo-tion.
This clogged a drive that
covered 75 futile yards.
In the third period, LeRoy

Zentic and Dick McCashland
stole the ball and McCashland
steamed 22 yards for a touch
down to bring NU within sev
en points of the K-Staters, 13
6, and Nebraska fans began
to envision another last-quarter
victory for the Huskers.
However, retaliation was
swift: K-State, its offense
stymied 18 yards from the Ne
braska goal, turned to gifted
halfback Ben Grosse. He toed
the perfect field goal that
most observers considered the
turning point in the game.
Hukser Miscuei
Two of the Wildcats' touch
downs were converted direct
ly from Husker miscues. One
followed a high pass from cen
ter on a fourth-down punt, the
other, a pass interception. On
the whole, the NU defense was
hard-hitting and tough, though
there were times late in the
game when Nebraska's tackl
ing was sub-par.
Judgment Day on the Husk
er offense was postponed for
at least a week, for three of
its leaders were sidelined for
much of the gam e. George
Harshman, No. 1 quarterback,
suffered a slight concussion
early in the first period; Zaru
ba left in the third quarter
with a strained knee; and
flashy halfback Pat Fischer,
still weak from the flu and
a bruised shoulder, saw ac
tion for only a few plays. (Of
these and other bruised Husk
ers, however, none were ser
iously injured.)
Coach Bill Jennings evalu
ated the Nebraska offense this
way: "Of course Harshman's
being out hurt us how
much, we can't tell: I thought
we moved the ball well. We
just stopped ourselves," he
said, referring to the penal
ties the Huskers incurred at
crucial points throughout the
afternoon.
The statistics s e e m e d to
back him up; they were much
more even than on any pre
vious Saturday for the Husk
ers. NU had 12 first downs to
K-State's 14, and net yardage
of 216 to the winners' 279.

Sammies Drop ZBT 27-7
Although the Z.B.T.'s man

the first quarter against the

the Sammy defense led by

Working their pass patterns

quarters as they won 27-7.
The first time the Sammies
had possession. Norm Phillips
passed to Bernie.Turkel in the

the extra point.
The Zebs rallied and on a

to Milt Moskowitz they scored
their only touchdown. Rosen

of the first quarter was 7-7.
