Missing from the list of last year's lettermen will be Bob Elwood and Mike Fleming. Fleming ws showing im provement last spring and was counted on for points this year. However, the former Baltimore prepster, enlisted in the Marines this past sum mer. Elwood has graduated. Mullins Returns Joe Mullins was Nebraska's best performer until he was, cut down during the flu epi- demic last fall. Mullins: helped the Huskers to a 3-1 record during the season, but he was unable to run in the conference meet and the Huskers finished in s i x t h! place. Besides Mullins, the Huskers have returning letter men in the persons of Bill Melody, Knolly Barnes, Ken Ash, and Jerry Marples. Newcomers include Joe American Horse, J .D. Schaf er, and Ron Callan. American Horse was the state high school gold medal winner in the mile for several years. Schafer won the Class A 440 his senior year in high school, while Callan was an 880 gold medal winner at the state car nival kls senior year. Last week end during a practice run, Mullins ran the three mile cross country course in 15:50. Joe American Horse finished in second place. Do You Enjoy Ice Skating? Last spring organized j groups and dormitories on the I campus were polled as to me preference for or against ice skating as a co-recreational activity for university stn i dents. The response to the in ' quiries was sufficient enough to cause the intramural de?-' partment to negotiate with the auditorium management for definite dates for univer j sity ice skating. The auditorium tnanage iment was very generous in arriving at the price for skat ing tickets. The price of 33c per session is very nominal for an evening of activity and : entertainment In order to se- cure such a price, it w as nec ! essary to assure them a mini 1 mum financial return. Not to be outdone, the Sig Eps retaliated with another touch down in three plays. This time it was Rowely to Fager. The Sig Nu's hit paydirt in the form of a Hergenrader to Walker pass play. - Three Lettermen Kansas State will also be opening its cross country sea son when they run against the Huskers. Coach Ward Haylett has listed a seven-man K State team including three 1957 lettermen to start for the Wildcats. Last year the Wildcats fin ished fourth in ' conference competition. They will be sparked by Tom Rodda, Wich ita senior; Duane H o 1 m a n, Topcka junior: and Loren Ray, Wakefield junior, Last year Holman, who wes freshman Big Seven mile king, led throughout the race, but was caught in the last 50 yards by Mullins who went on to win by just a couple steps. Mullins set a record of 15:27 before the university can use the Pershing Auditorium fa cilities. Oct 15 Deadline The commitment must be fulfilled by O c t o b e r 15. At that time a certain amount of tickets must be sold to meet the quota. The tickets come in books that are transferable and the tickets can be used at one time or they may be used all at one time. If' the university cannot meet their quota, then they must forfeit their reserved dates. It might be a good idea for some groups to get together j and have ice skating social functions. Since the tickets! can all be used at one time,! houses and dormitories could buy several books and use them all in one night. Also, many people have complained " during previ ous winters that the ice-skating facilities in Lincoln have ben somewhat limited. This is a chance to be assured of ice skating during the win ter months at a very low price. The following are the dates reserved for all-university ice skating at Pershing Auditori um: November 6, December 11, January 15, January 22, 1 January 29, February 5, March 12, and April 9. Tickets may be purchased at the room 102, men's phys ical education building. Also feel free to call regarding any : information or questions con cerning ice skating. GENERAL TELEPHONE America's Sscond Largest Telephone System Huskers i Both Teams May Be Without The Full Services Of Key Players By Norman Bcatty The Huskers go against their second straight Big Eight opponent, Kansas State, this weekend. Nebraska is given a slight edge ever the Wildcats. "Every game is a rough one", states coach Bill Jen nings. 'We are still in good shape and are ready". Halfback Pat Fischer who missed the heavier workouts this week is again a doubtful starter. If the Scarlet and Cream receive the opening kick-off, Pat will more than likely be in the action. Two Wildcats Out Kansas State will be without the services of two key play ers; Captain Gene Meier, guard, and second unit full back Bill Gallagher. The for mer, according to scouting, was the main cog in the K. State defense. Pacing the Wildcats offense will be Ben Grosse and Joe Vader, who compose the 1-2 punch when the Staters go to the air, as they usually do. Grosse also handles the field goal kicking.
