The Doily Nebroskon Page 3 Monster Purdue Machine Wears Down Huskers 28-0 Mondoy, September 29, 1958 By Randall Lambert The massive Purdue grid machine pounded Nebraska for almost three quarters be fore the thin Husker ranks wore down and fell 28-0. Purdue coach Jack Mollen. kopf battered the smaller Huskers with 45 men, but still the Scarlet and Cream man aged to put forth their only scoring drive in the last quar ter. During the first half Mol lenkopfs monsters backed the Huskers up against their own goal line time again, but the Boilermakers didn't push across a score until the sec ond period. Twice in the first period Purdue marched Inside the Nebraska ten yard line, but each time Nebraska held fast. Score Third Time The third time was the charm. Purdue made a first down on the Husker 10fe yard line. In two cracks the Boiler makers were to the four. One more play and they lay less than two from the goal line. With fourth and a yard to go for the first down and inches more to go for a score, the Boilermakers first unit crashed into the Husker line. However, the Husker line bent, but it didn't break and it appeared Nebraska haj held for the third time. How ever, the Scarlet elation was shortlived. On the next play Bob Jarus, Purdue full back, smacked over. When the teams retired to thetr dressing rooms at the half, Nebraska was down 7-0. They had been outrushed 196 yards to 31, and outdowned 15-4. It was beginning to become clear that Purdue was not to be denied in the second half They weren't. The Boilermakers ground out two tallies in the third quarter and added Insurance with another touchdown In th fourth. Late in the last quarter with Purdue leading 28-0, Nebras ka tried to field the kickoff only to have the ball bounce out of bounds on Husker 17 yard line. Huskers Begin Drive However, Dick McCashland hit for fourteen yards which was followed by the first of Harry Tolly's completed passes, this one being to end Bill Bohannan. Purdue moved offside on the next play and for the first time Nebraska moved into Purdue territory with a first down on the Boilermaker 49 yard line. Clay White was on the re ceiving end of Tollv's next pass as he legged it to the 27 yard stripe. Again Tolly hit the airlanes. This time the receiver beine Roland Mc Dole who was eight yards deeper in Purdue territory. Big Eight Roundup Missouri Rates As By Randall Lambert If anyone rated the role of a darkhorse before the sea son began, it was probably Missouri. The Tigers have played two games since then, but.it is still difficult to tell anything about them. It's true that the Tigers had seven regulars back including all-conference fullback Hank Kuhlman and another all con ference choice in the person of guard Charlie Rash. With that in mind most experts would look towards a big sea son for Mizzou. New Coach However, Missouri has a new coach and a new offense. Two years ago they were playing under Don Faurot and the split-T. Last year it was Frank Boyles and the Belly series T formation. This year the coach is Dan Devine with the multiple dffense. After spring drills the Tigers looked like they had taken tne change in stride. However, since that time the coaching staff may have changed its mind. Their new coach, Dan De- vine, is a young fellow (33) who didn't take many lumps while coaching previously at Men's Rec. During his three year tenure at the helm of the Sun Devil's grid for tunes he won 27 games, lost 3 and tied one. Of course he wasn't in a conference with Oklahoma. Last year his unbeaten Staters along with Auburn were the only two maior un defeated untied teams in the nation. Arizona State was ranked 12th in the nation by AP and UP polls. This year Missourians were looking forward to more of fense from the Tigers, but as yet they haven't seen it. Mizzou Record Even Last week Missouri was de feated by Vandrffbilt 12-3. This past week they evened their score by defeating Idaho 14-10. Idaho had been defeat ed the previous week by Ore gon 27-0, while Vandy knocked off a good Georgia team 21-14. Both Vanderbilt and Idaho were supposed to have just so-so teams. Missouri lost most heavily through graduation at the tackles and ends. Right-half George Cramer was lost from the backfield via graduation, while pro baseball made inroads else where in the backfield. Char lie James, a two-year half back, and Mike Shannon, promising freshman quarter back, both signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. One Vet Coupled with Shannons loss, the scholastic ineligibility of number two quarterback Don Mason left Mizzou with just one signal caller, Phil Snow- den. Snowden, thus far, has been sensational. Against Vandy he hit 9-18 passes for 78 yards for tops in the Big Eight. Last Saturday he completed 11-22 for 132 yards. j Another bright spot has! been soph fullback Jim Miles who moved Kuhlman to a ; halfback spot and just last; Saturday scored one of t h e two Missouri touchdowns against Idaho. i ENGLISH: slow train engine Wtch.j8 ' THINKLISH: Lucky Strike presents fi rr? pr fi GnJ" Speak English all your life and what does it get you? Leading the Sig Nus was quarterback Yogi Hergenrat er who hit end Matthews twice for touchdowns, Walker once and ran another himself. The Phi Delts scor d in the third quarter on a pass play from Dick Jacobs to J o h n Griffiths. The Sigma Nus remain un defeated after two games. The Phi Delts have yet to win a game. Sig Eps Over Delts Sigma Phi Epsilon won Its second football outing of the season Friday evening by overpowering the Delta Tau Delta team 13-2. After a scoreless first quar ter, quarterback Cork Rowley passed to Gus Buenz in the end zone for six points. Minutes later Rowley connected with Pete Peterson for the second touchdown of the evening. The play was a result of the de fensive efforts of Ch&rlle Greenwald and Ken Haggard who forced the Delts to punt just preceeding the t.d. flip. Ron Morse nailed ATO tail back Bill Kuester behind his own goal to score a safety and provide the winning mar gin for the DUs. Dick Whitcomb led the DU offense with his running and passing. He tosssd a scoring strike to Jim Asche, and turned in three long runs through a broken field. He al so contributed to the second DU tally when he threw a pass to Ron Krafka in the flat who in turn threw down field to Don Smidt for the touchdown.
