PAGE 4 SUMMER NEBRASKAN JULY 10, 1958 Remedial Dilemma Tackled The university is experi menting with a possible solu tion to the problem of reme dial college courses this sum mer. Beginning July 14. KUOX TV will broadcast a three week course in remedial Eng lish for next fall's incoming freshmen showing weaknes ses in English. University entrance exam inations are given in the spring to Lincoln high school students and also in the sum-! mer to those who wish to avail i themselves of it then. English deficiencies are determined from these examinations. ! According to Lee W. Chat field, director of Junior Divi sion, incoming freshmen scheduled to take the non credit course, English A, will, be encouraged to take the tele vised course. Successful com pletion of the course will qualify students for English' B. a credit course. ! Mrs. Helen Graham, super-! isor of English A, will teach the course at 7 p.m. Monday I through Friday over Channel 12. i Robert Schlater, assistant producer-director of educa-: tional television, said, "Na tionally there is a great deal of experimentation in educa tional television. Studies have shown that television-taught students do as well, and in most cases, somewhat better' than the student in the nor-, mal classrcom situation." Concert To Air Student Talent With the downbeat of Em manuel Wishnow's baton, the Summer Symphony Orchestra will present a concert July 16 at 8 p. m. in the Union ball room. The orchestra is comprised of some 55 summer school students who are studying ap plied music. The concert will be the culmination of the summer orchestra credit course, Wishnow said. Wishnow will conduct the orchestra in the following se lections: Overture to the Ruy Bias by Mendelssohn. The Faithful Shepherd by Handel Beeeham, Three Bavarian Dancers by Elgar, The Red River Gig by Benjamin, Sheep and Goat by Guion, Summer Evening by Delius. Faculty Wives Fete Mrs. Bedell A Faculty wives guest luncheon will honor Stella V. BedcU at 12 a.m., July 15, in Parlours XYZ Union. Mrs. Bedell is the wife of Dr. Ralph C. Bedell, specialist in higher education programs in the United States Office of Education and former secretary-general of the South Pa cific commission. At the luncheon, Mrs. Be dell will give her impressions of life in the South Pacific. University faculty women, faculty wives, graduate wom en students and wives of graduate students are invited.
