Union College in Lincoln will get in face-lifting which will even
tually add five buildings to the campus, located in the southeast

ministration office and additions to the men's dormitory and furni

No Weather Letup In East
Still unable to dig out from the week-end blizzard and cold spell,
the eastern part of the nation saw no relief in sight for the weather
man's pranks.
Over 180 lives were claimed by the storms which sent the mer
cury down to the bottom of the tube in some cases as low as
unofficial minus 40 readings. Northern New York had readings of
25 below.
Traditionally warm through the winter months, Georgia schools
and industries were closed for lack of proper heating facilities and
inadequate fuel supplies.
Atlanta recorded a low of two above zero.
States of emergency were declared in Michigan City, Ind., struck
by a 42 inch snowfall and snow-paralyzed Springfield, Mass.
The protracted cold spell, now in its 10th day will continue to
plague the eastern half of the U.S.
Financial Help Urged
Congress has been urged to create a large program to help
needy students obtain college education in courses of their own
choosing.
The American Council on Education said their proposal is just
i-iu step in a long-range multi-billion dollar program the United
States must undertake if it is to overtake the Soviet Union in grants
to education.
The views of the panel of educators were given before the Senate
Labor and Public Welfare Committee which is studying educational
needs to bolster the defense effort.
Commies Keep Airliner
The Communist North Korean government has rejected a United
Nations demand for the return of a South Korean airliner containing
two Americans and two Germans among its 34 passengers which
disappeared in North Korea Sunday.
The plane, it is speculated, was forced into the Communist domi
nated land, and will be kept there as blackmail the Reds plan to
foist against the West for official recognition of that land.
However, a North Korean army official stated that the Korean
National Airlines plane entered the Red country "voluntarily" in a
righteous action to escape the war policy of the American imperial
ists and the puppet Syngman Rhee clique."
Nominations For Britons
Britons are dominating the Academy Award nominations this
year.
Nominees for top awards include Alec Guiness for "The Bridge
on the River Kwai;" Charles Laughton, "Witness for the Prosecu
tion;" Deborah Kerr, "Heaven Knows Mr. Allison," and Elizabeth
Taylor, "Raintree County."
The televised Oscar award ceremonies will be on March 26.
"Sayonara," a movie about an American major's love for a
Japanese girl won the most nominations 10.
Young GOP Clubs Organize
Drives to start Young Republican clubs in all counties in the
First and Second Nebraska Congressional districts are scheduled to
get underway Monday, according to Ray Simmons, state Young
GOP chairman.
Part of a statewide effort to increase the membership in the
YR program, the current recruiting will follow recent organization
attempts in the Third Congressional District which resulted in the
formation of Young Republican groups in Madison and Dakota
Counties.
