Studying Colleges:
Japanese Educator Visits
W On World-Wide Tour
Dr. Monkicki Namba, president
of Kobe College in Japan, toured
the University campus Thursday,
as part of a three month study of
colleges in the United States.
Kobe is a small women's college
which specializes in a liberal arts
education. The curriculum is di
vided in four main departments:
English literature, sociology, home
economics and , music.
" Kobe is located in a suburb of
Oseta, end most of the students are
commuters who come to the
school from larger towns. Day stu
dents comprise 85 per cent of the
enrollment. The college is now cele
brating its 80th anniversary.
Promotion of education for
women is one of the greatest con
tributions of the Christian religion
in Japan, Namba said. Women
are getting more equal status with
men according to laws, but it takes
time because it is a new idea, he
added.
The purpose of Namba's tour is
to learn how to run the adminsitra
tion of the college better and to
better understand women's psy
chology. The Rockefeller Founda
tion is sponsoring the trip.
Namba said he is amazed at the
nice buildings and high standards
on this campus. "Lincoln is for the
University," he added.
He plans to have conferences
with Chancellor Clifford Hardin,
Dean Margery Johnson, and Dean
W. W. Wright later to discuss the
university's administration. He will
also tour the University's home
economics department.
Former Chancellor Speaks:
Custavson Discusses A-Energy
American universities need to
train 20,000 experts in peaceful use
of atomic energy' during the next
10 years, Dr. R. G. Gustavson, for
mer Chancellor of the University,
and present head of Resources for
the Future Inc., said. Gustavson
spoke to 900 educators at the an
nual convention of the Association
of Land-Grant Colleges and Univer
sities. .
Peaceful applications of atomic
energy and Russian farm policies
were the topics discussed. Russia's
agricultural policy and the Soviets
new "good will" advances to the
West was discussed in a panel
composed by Dean W. V. Lambert
of the College of Agriculture, Lau
ren Sothe, Dean W. E. Reed of
North Carolina State University,
and C. R. Elder of Iowa State Col
lege.
Sothe, who suggested the farm
exchange visit in an editorial in
the Des Moines Register stated
that Russian farm operations were
"inefficient" and produced a diet
containing "two-thirds bread."
He said Russia needs nearly half
its labor force to provide food for
its population. The U. S. uses
around 12 per cent of its people.
