DAILY NEBRASKAN
Freshmen students have a pep
club of their own at Nebraska be
cause Corn Cobs and Tassels are
limited to upperclassmen.
The pepsters can be seen at ev
ry game in the center of the Ne
braska cheering section. The girls
vear white sweaters and the boys
wear red. When sitting in their as
signed seats the pepsters make a
huge white, block "N" on a red
background.
From their 50-yardline seats the
popsters are the nucleus of Ne
braska's cheers. Besides cheering
at every game, the pepsters are
part of the card section, and at
tend all rallies.
More than 300 freshmen are in
Pepsters. The organization is spon
sored by Corn Cobs and Tassels
together. The two senior organiza
tions teach all of the cheers to the
freshmen and organize the group.
In the fall, during New Student
Week the freshmen sign up for
Pepsters. Affiliated students must
Join through their houses and in
dependent students sign up direct
ly at the Student Union. Before
the games two mass meetings will
be held.
Cheerleaders Yell, Stunt
Through Football Season
Nebraska s cheerleaders are a
select few. Not only does the squad
have the stamina and coordination
that is needed for cheerleading,
but it also uses somersaults, cart
wheels and other acrobatic stunts.
The yell squad is chosen through
tryouts in the spring after the bask
etball season. From these two
freshmen women and three fresh
men ment are selected. Before the
tryouts, practices are held for all
those interested in trying out. At
the practices the cheerleaders
teach the cheers and five pointers.
The cheerleaders, of course, lead
the cheers at all home games.
And this year, for the first time,
Nebraska sent her cheerleaders
along with the football team to the
Orange Bowl in Miani. In addition
to the games, the cheerleaders al
so lead the yells at the rallies.
Obviously, cheerleading is a lot
of hard work at Nebraska, but the
pride and excitement of knowing
that they are the very best are
ample compensation to the squad.

Group
Football games are a big part
of student life at NU. On the Sat
urdays that the team is playing in
Lincoln, thousands of students,
alumni, and interested friends of
the team crowd into the Memorial
Stadium. In the center of the
stands is a square of bright red
sweaters with large yellow and
green corn cobs sewed on the
front. These sweaters identify the
members of the men's pep club,
Pi Epsilon Pi or Corn Cobs.
The purpose of the Cobs is to
promote spirit and to serve the
university through the student body
and campus organizations. Of
course, like all pep organizations,
the primary function for the lub
is building morale. Besides leading
the yells at the games, the Cobs
also plan rallies, set up the card
sections, and sell N club flowers.
To serve the University in other
capacities, the members also sell
the yearbooks and help any or
ganization when they can.
The big event for the Corn Cobs
is Homecoming Day. For this day
the members, along with Tassels,
plan and promote the Homecom
ing Parade, the presentation of
the Homecoming Queen; and, as a
fitting climax, the Homecoming
Dance.
Because the freshmen have their
own club, Corn Cobs is limited to
sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
During their first year, the sopho
mores are members on a trial
basis. Then those who proved
themselves worthy by their inter
est, work, and satisfactory scholar
ship, are initiated during their jun
ior year. During their junior year
the members head the committees
and plan the activities.
The senior members of Corn
Cobs are the officers. But all,
knowing the fine work that the
Cobs have accomplished, are
equally proud of their red sweaters.
There was a young maiden, a Sioux
As tempitng as fresh honeydioux,
She displayed her cute knees
As she strolled past teepees,
And the braves, they all hollered
"Wioux-Wioux!"
"Jack makes me tired."
"It's your own fault, dear. You
should stop running after him."
Delia: Haven't you heard? Mari
lyn has just married Roger.
Bella: Roger! Not really! Why
that was the boy she was pinned to.

It's a woman's world. When a
man is born, people ask: "How is
the mother?" When he marries,
they exclaim: "What a lovely
bride!" When he dies they inquire:
"How much did he leave "her?"
