Of course, the season is still In a tender stage and many of the round-ball artists of the state's smaller schools have not hit the headlines as yet, nevertheless a galaxy of stars can already be assembled. High on the list of boys who Coach Harry Good would strongly desire to see don scarlet and cream basketball suits next year is Robert Oakes. Oakes is the flashy North Platte senior who has turned In some nice performances this year. Oakes teamed up with Darrell Lloyd last year to almost upset Lincoln high in the state tournament. He is probably a cinch to make many all-state teams. Towering Jim Toft has been taking his ch res in fine stride foi Grand Island. The always-tough Islander attack is centered around the 6'6" senior center. Toft is brother of the ex-Reynoldsville flash. Dale, who is now displaying his talent (for 8 healthy sum of money) at Denver uni versity. It is hoped that ycunger Toft will see fit to remain loyal to his home state and bring his wares to Lincoln (compensation being consiaeraoiy less;. The big noise that roared into Lincoln from Fremont last year at the state tournament and is still echoing around the Cornhusker capital is one Mr. Johnny Neff . The terrible Tiger is still nlavine all-state basketball for the class A basketball champion Fremont and Coach Farris. He is, inci dentally, receiving some very valuable assistance from Ron Donahue (and 25 other veterans). The Tigers, as a team, could be plenty luutii cuius Mjuuiaineni ume. i ; Leading a gang of very well matched Lincoln Links crusaders is very talented Dean Sloan. Son of former Husker football great, Clair, Dean is averaging over 13 points per game. Sloan started his basketball career as a sophomore at the red and black school, a fete that few athletes can claim (Joe Good did in 1947) Scotty Orcutt's Omaha Benson five is making its bid in the metropolis intercity league with Johnny Morris heading the fight . for the green and white clad Bunnies. Morris is just a little guy but as tne proverb goes, "dynamite often comes in small packages." Morris is faced with taking over the team leadership that looked to fall on Ron Smith's shoulders I this year. Many other names will be added to this list as the high school season progresses. Undoubtedly Seward's ace pivotman, Lyle Mueller will get his share of the printed type; Bill Averill of Scottsbluff should be coming along also; and Ken Forbes of Northeast. Conference Basketball Teams Face Full Week Off Activity Big Seven action will be going full blast this Saturday as con ference teams swing into full weekend slates. Only the Okla homa Sooners will be playing a non-conference opponent. This means that the league basketball standings will be come a little clearer after Sat urday'! team faring. Kansas uni versity will buck heads with the Missouri Tigers; Iowa State will tangle with the Buffs of Colo rado; and the Cornhuskers will match buckets with the Kansas State Quintet. M Cage Schedule RECORD HOLDER . . . Jim Buchanan, star Cornhusker guard, set six new records during the Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament at Kansas City 3. Most points ever scored by a guard 134. 4. Most field goals scored by a guard in one game 10. " . Most field goals scored by a guard in three games 28. 6. Most field goals ever scored by a guard 58. Forty-nine Big Seven basketball records were either hroken or tied at the Big Seven tournament. It took most of a week of checking and re-checking to wind up the records for the 1951 meet which is itself almost a record, In addition to the playing marks there were new standards set in attendance and gate receipts. In the second round overtime game between Iowa State and Stanford, won by the Indians, it is believed that a major college record for total points was set. At least it will serve to bring to light any greater scoring orgies. Here, are the marks set or tied in the 1951 meet: 1. Most players scored 94. 2. Most total meet points 1727. 3. Most total meet points for winning teams 920. 4. Most total meet points for losing teams 807. 5. Most points 1 team 1 game 103 by Stanford vs. Iowa State. 6. Don Statiffer has taken on the scoring task for the Mis sourians in most of the games this year and led them to a suc cessful runner-up position in the recent Big Seven tourney at Kansas City. Missouri's season record is six wins against five defeats. The Nebraska Cornhuskers, surprisingly riding in a three-way first place tie, will be packing their gear for an engagemenut with the Wildcats of Gardner, at Manhattan. The fighting, young Cornhus kers dropped Colorado in their first conference test while the Wildcats are still officially untried by a conference foe. The Huskers have a season record of four wins against eight losses and the K- staters have nine wins and three losses. The Gardner tutored Wildcats flexed their basketball muscles last week with a 78-52 romp over Arizona. The Huskers fell to the Staters 86-66 at the Kan sas City carnival. The Colorado Buffaloes will at tempt to get back into the win column as they meet the Iowa State Cyclones. The Buffs have already succombed to Kansas and Nebraska. The Cyclones nipped Missouri 57-55 to have a share of that three way first place claim. The Cyclones have a six and three record in Its early season contests and the Golden Buffs ! of Bebe Lee have won three of their twelve starts. Clyde Lovellette, baby-faced Jayhawk giant, just about started a major riot during the Kansas-Missouri fray. With four minutes remaining in the game, Lovellette allegedly stepped on the Tiger's Win Wolfong as he lay on the floor. Perhaps the Tigers will remember this little incident during their game with the sunflower boys Saturday.
