Jespersen

BY JERRY
Norm Jespersen, Iowa State Teachers forward, gave the
University of Nebraska cagers a rough battle for 53 min
utes last night.
The six-foot four-inch senior scored 30-points, 21 in
the first half, and kept the Panthers in the game up until
13 minutes of the second half as the Cornhuskers outlasted
the Iowa team, bU-D4. r
Jespersen missed only two shots
from the field before intermis
sion. All of his shots the first
half were on one-handed set
shots from the left side of the
floor.
Duo Score
Jim Ludeman, 6-5 center, and
Jespersen scored all but one of
the Panther's 32 points in that
. hectic first half.
The lead changed hands 12
times the first half and the ball
game was tied 17 times during
the evening.
Baskets by Bob Gates, Bus
Whitehead and Joe Malacek gave
the Buskers a 7-4 lead with two
minutes gone in the game and
that was the greatest margin at
tained by Coach Barry Good's
men until they pulled away from
the tiring Panthers late in the
quarter. Whitehead's hook shots
and long tallies by Joe Brown
managed to keep the Busker
score close to that of Jespersen.
The Panther scoring ace aver
aged more than a point a minute
the first 15 minutes. He slowed
down in the closing minutes of
the first half, however, and only
tallied one free throw.
Good changed his defense
somewhat in the second half and
held the point maker to 9 points.
Whitehead, Brown Good.
Whitehead kept his scoring eye
in the second half and wound
up as high man for the Buskers
with 15 markers, his largest total
for the year.
Brown was the main Nebraska
threat on defense. Me and Joe
Malacek kept Jespersen in tab
' most of the last quarter. The 6-0
Nashville, Tenn., guard also had
.the distinction of being "the first
Busker eager to foul out of a
ball game this season. Be left
the game with 38 seconds re
maining. Until that time he had
not been relieved.
Buskers Rebounding1.
The Cornhuskers controlled the
majority of rebounds from both
boards. Good had his tall platoon
in most of the game. This squad
included Whitehead, 6-9, at
center; Bob Pierce, 6-6 's, and
Joe Malacek, 6-5, at the forward
posts and Brown, 6-0, and Jim
Buchanan, 6-0, playing guards.
Tony Lawry, game captain, al
ternated with Malacek.
Buchanan, Whitehead and
Pierce spearheaded the attack
that left the undermanned
Panthers behind in the last seven
minutes. Buchanan, sophomore
from Fort Wayne, Ind., per
formed well against the pressing
Teacher defense. "Tricks" fin
ished the game with 9 points.

55-50
The Nebraska Frosh over
whelmed the Varsity "B" squad,
55-50 in the curtain raiser at the
Coliseum Wednesday night.
Playing a fast game, the frosh
combination of Stickels, Martin,
Hollowuy, Reynolds and Good
was just too sharp for the B
team. Stickels scored 12 points
for the high individual score of
the game.
Al Blesing scored 18 points to
lead the B-Ballers, matching Good
of the freshman.
The Frosh got off to a good
start to lead 28-18 at the half, and

With only one week of com
petition remaining in the Denomi
national Bowling, Cotner House is
still on top by a very slim margin
over the Lutherans. Cotner took
three victories from the Presby

while at the same time the Luth

terVarsity to make their record
11-1.
The scene is now set for the
final games. The leaders must
play each other next Tuesday.
The Lutherans need all three
games to emerge Champs while
2 out of 3 for Cotner will insure
