Curriculum "Use the cartoon to interpret the news," That's the reason for the addition of an editorial car tooning course offered by Iowa U. school of journalism. The course is the first of its kind to be offered by a univer sity, according to the instructor, Richard Spencer. Artistic abilicy is not required for admittance to the course. A text for the course, written by Spencer, was recently pub lished and contains data compiled from correspondence and personal interviews with 25 of the nation's top editorial cartoonists. The ideal prospect for such a course, according to Spencer, would be a combination of artist, journalist and social scientist. All students must produce at least one editorial a week. Many and varied uses are found for these cartoons. They are used in the Daily Iowan, the student publication, and in the Frivol, the campus humor magazine. Occa sionally these cartoons attract the attention of editors of large pa pers who reprint them on their pages. The Dps Moines Register re printed a Daily Iowan cartoon in July. National Contests National contests provide both subject matter and audience for the "budding" cartoonists. The subject matter is not re stricted, and students may inter pret the news in any way they desire. The cartoonists receive in struction and criticism in inter pretative illustration such as charts, graphs and spot drawings in newspaper and magazine stories. Spencer gained his role as in- Voc-Ag Group Seeks Members Vocational education majors and students who have intentions of becoming vocational education majors are urged to attend a meeting of the newly formed Voc-Ag association. This meeting will be Wednes day sight Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 206 of the Ag Engineer ing building. Officers will be nominated at this meeting. There will also be a discussion of the newly framed constitution, purposes and possi ble activities and objectives of the association. Ex-Nebraskan Featured In Saturday Evening Post Dr. Edwin Harris Colbert, Ne braska university graduate, cura tor of fossil reptiles at the Amer ican Museum of Natural History and professor of paleontology at Columbia university, was the ub ject of an article in the Aug. 6 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The article was entitled "The Man Who Hunts Old Bones." Har ris was a member of the 1928 His brother, J. Philip Colbert, '35, is associate professor of civil engineering at the university. NU Graduate Appointed KFAU News Announcer Robert E. Jones, who graduated from the University last June, has been promoted to the Omaha branch of radio station KFAB. An English major, Jones, worked for the station in Lincoln 411 Club to Hold Dance Thursday The University 4-II club is planning a square dance in the Ag College Activities building, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p. m. The primary purpose is to interest freshmen students, who were former 4-H members, in joining the club. During the course of the eve ning, the cjub officers will be in troduced and the aims of the University club will be ex plained. The serving of refresh ments will bring the dance to a close. Paul Kemling has been con tacted to call the squares dances and a record player will provide the "fiddlin." All freshmen who were formerly 4-H members are cordially invited to attend. while attending the university. He will have charge of several news programs in Omaha.
