Tuesday, March' 8, 1949 Sig Ep Boxers Win Six First Round Matches Sigma Phi Epsilon opened its defense of the intramural team boxing championship successfully Monday night as they won six opening round bouts. Trailing the Sig Eps in winners were: DUs, 3; Phi Gamma Delta, 2; ATO's, Farm House and Brown Palace, one each. Two of last year's champions took impressive victories. Tom Loisel, Sig Ep, had the only knockout of the evening, drop ping Jerry Robertson, Phi Gam, in 59 seconds of the first round. Loisel felled Robertson with a right to the body and a left to the temple. Loisel 'won the 155 pound class last spring. . Last year's 145 pound titlist, Jerry Hull, has moved up to 155 pounds. Hull, representing the Phi Gams, stopped Bob Dealey, Brown Palace, in the second. The boys fought pretty evenly in the first round, but Hull showed too much pov er in the second. Don Theil, DUs, a second place winner last year, was upset in the 145 pound division by Jack Carroll of the ATOs. The fight was a rough and tumble one all of the way with Carroll outslug ging his shorter but game oppo nent for the decision. In the 125 pound class, Derald May, DU, runnerup last year at 130, put on a fine exhibition of counterpunching to decision Jerry Blatchford, Alpha Sig. Eugene Thomas, independent, took a decision over Bill Moss of Delta Upsilon in the wildest battle of the night. The two fighters put on a real back alley brawi, going to the floor together on several occasions. Bob Skotchdopole, Sig Ep, ral lied after a weak start to deci sion Paul Hartman, Phi Gams, in a hard-hitting match. The win ner was second in the 145 pound division last year. Semifinals will be held tonight, with the finals scheduled for Thursday. Officials for Monday s fights were: referee, Harold Mathews; judges. Mike Miller and Charles E. Miller, 125 Ibn : Peru Id My. STUART THEATRE fltadent Ticket Jl.Ofl at B.x Offl HuskcVs Win; Clinch Share Of Loup Title Coach Harry Good's fighting eagers, rebounded from their over time defeat Saturday, to stop Mis souri, 52-48 Monday night. The win clinched at least a tie for the conference crown, and if Colorado can upset Oklahoma Saturday night the Scarlet will be all alone at the top. The Missouri game was close most of the way, with the Huskers trailing at the half, and then spurting to take a 50-40 lead with four minutes left. A desperate Tiger rally drew the Missourians up to 50-48 two minutes before the finish. Nebraska stalled for a minute, then shook Ken Anderson loose under the basket with the clincher. Bob Cerv, speedy NU guard, paced the Husker quint with 13 points. He was just ahead of for ward Anton Lawry who dropped in 12. Coach Good's squad rolled to a 13-9 lead with eight minutes gone in the first half, but the Tigers bounced back to lead 15-13 after ten. The lead changed hands sev eral times before the first half ended with Missouri leading 24-23. Nebraska ran the score to 32-25 before MU could count from the field, and were never headed. The Tigers drew close at 39-36, 43-39, and finally 50-48. rierpont was the Missouri spark, scoring 16 points while holding Retherford to two field goals. The meet will be held on the indoor track beginning at 5:00 both days. Coach Weir and freshman coaches have the squad as evenly as possible for the meet, taking time from workouts, intramurals and postal meet records. TheVfreshmen have been bols tered by the addition of many of the place winners in the intra mural meet, and freshmen basket bailers. Coach Weir hopes to have all of the five place winners out regularly during the next three weeks. Another intra-squad meet is planned for March 16 and 17, and a freshman-varsity dual during the last week in March. The fresh man -varsity meet should provide several feature events, particularly in the relay and the pole vault. Don Cooper, who holds the varsity indoor record with a 14-2 mark, will vault for the frosh, opposing Nebraska's Big Seven indoor champion, Leonard Kehl. Kehl went 13' 11" to break the confer ence record, and is pointing for Cooper's indoor high. The freshman also have a top four lap relay team, but they will probably i .eet the best Husker sprint team in the school's history. The varsity team will be named from these six: Harry Meginnis, Dick Hutton, Alan Thompson, Don Vollertson, Fritz Ware and Loyal Hurlburt.
