Block & Bridle Merit Award
Presented to Ag Graduate
Ned Raun of Minden, a gradu
ate of Ag college last year, has
been named the most outstanding
student in the Block and Bridle
club for 1948. By virtue of his
success, Raun will receive the Na
tional Merit trophy of the organ
ization. Particularly flattering to the Ne
braska chapter is the fact that
this is the second straight year
that a member of the local club
has won the award. Willard Visek
of Ord was the winner last year.
It is also the first time in the his
tory of the award that any school
has received that honor in suc
ceeding years.
Graduated with high distinction,
Raun was also outstanding on Ne
braska livestock judging teams
while in school. He placed second
high individual in the 1947 inter
collegiate contest at Kansas City.
Since his graduation, Raun has
been operating a 960 acre farm
near Minden, 150 acres of which
is under irrigation. His farm man
agement plan is the result of a
program which he drew up while
a student at:Ag college.
He was active in student affairs
while at Nebraska as a chairman
of Ag Executive Board, chairman
of the judiciary committee of the
student council, master of cere
monies of the 1947 Junior Ak-Sar-Ben
Livestock show, and Chancel
lor of Alpha Zeta.
Honoraries which listed him as
a member include, Innocents,
Sigma Xi, Alpha Zeta and Gamma
Sigma Delta. He was a member
of Alpha Gamma Rho fTternity.

Typical comments on the lat
est uprising regarding the Ag
branch of Student Health "What
is it!", "But I thought they had
discontinued it!", "What hours
are they open?" and so on into
the night.
At least the general consensus
of opinion is that students are
not aware that there is such a
thing in existence, and it may be
due to lack of publicity. To com
bat such a condition, Dr. Fuen
ning, director of Student Health,
plans to distribute a booklet
which will outline the benefits
of that service for future classes.
Present hours of the clinic are
from 8:30 to 9:30 any morning of
the week and it's free to all stu
dents, faculty and employees of
the Ag college. Next time you
have a sore throat, cut, bruise, or
you name it, stop around and try
out the service offered at the Ag
Student Health center located in
the College Activities building.
Ed Higginbotham, Ag Phys Ed.
chief, has lined up a job for him
self in the coming months. Be
sides parties, programs, meetings
and classes which are held on the
floor at the CA building, he is
faced with the problem of sched
uling 132 Ag league basketball
games, in addition to a few from
the city campus. Always a boost
er of athletics on the Ag campus,
"Higgy" has lined up a 12-team
league for ag students only at
the expense of long hours for
himself.
A novelty about the Ag leagues
is that "A" and "B" teams will
play in the same competition,
rather than have two leagues.
"This will make it pretty tough
on the "B" teams, but everyone
will get to play more," comments
the Ag Phys Ed boss.
Not only does "Higgy" make up
the schedule, but he also super
vises the play from the scorer's
bench. It is not unusual, for him
to operate the watch and keep
I score at the same time, and I can
I remember' when hie has operated
that is more work than playing
as anyone who has tried it can
testify.
The whole sum and substance
of the matter is that you've got
to take your hat off to a man
who goes looking for work and
trouble as it often turns out.
Corn Cob actives will meet In
the West Stadium, Friday, 12:30,
for the Cornhusker picture. Cob
sweaters will be worn.
