Frisbie, state 4-H leader and Miss Florence Atwood, state head of women's extension work, have selected 24 University of Nebraska agricultural students who are to receive scholarships for the current school year. The awards, valued at $150, are awarded to students on the basis of scholarship, leadership, prom ise of success, and financial need. The awards were established in 1946 and carry a combined cash value of $3,600. Recipients are: seniors, Marilyn IMielson, Lincoln; Marjone Rey nolds, Lexington; Phyllis Ross, Lincoln; Ruth Swanson, Minden; Jackie Baird, Archer; Paul Fish back, Orleans; Philip Skinner, Alliance; and Archie White, Brad shaw. The band also formed a lucky horeshoe and the words "good luck." Foundation Plans First Mass Meet The newly reorganized Student Foundation will hold its first mass meeting Tuesday, Sept. 28. All of last year's workers and students interested in working for the service organization should meet then in room 315 of the Union at 7 p. m. sharp. Elaine Krause, chairman of the event, explained that a general meeting will be held from 7 to 7:30, and then the workers will divide into the activities of their choice for further discussion. Thirty-Five Freshmen Take Oaths as Midshipmen, USNR Cadet Officers To Meet Sepl. .JO The Cadet Officers' Association will meet Sept. 30 nt 7:30 p. m. in Parlors XVZ of the Student Union. Alrjuniors and seniors of th advanced corps are invited to at tend the smoker and business meeting. Plans will be made for the Military Hall. An election was held in the li nal meeting of last year. Offi cers are: John Meehan, presi dent; Phil Sprague, vice-president; Paul Hanson, secretary; and Norman Jensen, treasurer. Capt, William L. Messmer, pro fessor of naval science, has an nounced that 35 first year stu dents have begun professional careers in the U, S. Navy by tak ing their oaths as midshipmen, USNR. If successful in their four-year course, which includes three sum mer cruises, the midshipment will be commissioned as ensigns in the Navy. Of the 30,000 high school stu dents across the nation who took examinations to qualify for mid shipmen training, 2,000 appeared before boards of review. The 1952 class was selected from this group Those who are enrolled as mid shipmen receive tuition, books uniforms, an a $50 monthly al lowance from the Navy during training. In return they agree to serve a minimum of two years as naval officers upon graduation. In addition to the midshipmen class, the department of naval sci ence also has a first year class of 24 contract students who are re quired to take one summer cruise Successful contract students re ceive reserve commissions upon graduation.
