This regi ment gave him the nickname "Black Jack" by which he was well known in 1918. Kiwanis Award. The Kiwanis club awarded him their medal for distinguished citi zenship in December, 1931. He was a member of Lincoln Lodge No. 19 of the A. F. & A. M. Pershing was born near the frontier town of Laclede, Mo., in 1860 and spent most of his life soldiering.
