rage 4 THE SUMMER NEBRASKAN FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1948 Law College Dean Beutel Revises Negotiable Instruments' Law Book :-::S' j: I ft J- Frederick K. Beutel. Dean Frederick K. Buetel, of the Nebraska Law College, has recently prepared the seventh edi tion of Brannan's Negotiable In struments Law. The last two edi tions were also revised by Dean Beutel. The comments by the author have been greatly enlarged, re vised and brought to date. Leading cases from the mass of decisions have been carefully selected. Those which merely cite the sec tions generally or fail to add any thing to the contents, have been eliminated; but all authorities covering subsidiary questions of law under the Act have been set out in full The material is arranged as nearly as possible to conform with the subject matter of the Act, and for this reason is placed under the subsections of the Act, wherever possible. Side heads are inserted to further classify the material and to facilitate refer ence to the subject matter. Part one of the work is de voted to a text treatment of the history and interpretation of the Bridge Tourney N.I.L. by Dean Beute't. A brief outline of the material follows: THE DKVHOPMKNT OF NEGOTIABLE INSTRl MfcNTS IN EARLY KNiLlfH HISTORY The Law from the Conquest to the Statute of Staples The Staple System Transitional Period The Development of the Common Law COLONIAL WVRCKS OF THE NEGO TIABLE INSTRUMENTS LAW OK THE INITED STATES Colonial Laws and IOiral Systems Money and Bills of Cre.iit Assignability of Specialties Local Colonial Developments THE IEVEIiOrMENT OF STATE STATUTES ON NEtiOTHBLE IN STRUMENTS I'RIOU TO THE NEGO TIABLE INSTRUMENTS LAW Major Factors Affecting Tost-Revolu-tionary Laws The Law Merchant Hostility to English Law The Banking Statutes Colonial Assignment Statutes: Customs State Statutes at the Time of the Recom mendation of the N.I.L. References to articles in all law reviews are given so as to furnish access to a more extensive discus sion of the authorities. The work also includes citations to A.I.R. v. pM-rrtfr svstom. and a mass of easily accessible source material, all necessary in uu. writing of briefs and learned ar ticles. . Another feature of this edition Is the inclusion of the complete English Bills of Exchange Act. There are many references to the B.EA. in the commissioner's notes, and a comparison of the two acts should reveal much of the legislative history of the N.I.L. Part one of the work also con. tains the Act, with statutory var iations, and cross-references to re lated sections. This makes its highly technical material more "available" to the user and will be a distinct aid where an in dependent systematic interpreta tion of the Act is desired. Tables in part three enable a lawyer in any state to easily locate his own statutes.
