80 Candidates
For Opener
With the season's opener only
wo weeks away, Coach Tony
Sharpe is working with nearly 80
candidates for the 1948 Husker
baseball team.
The diamond men were unable
to practice outside until late in
the week. Southern Methodist will
be the first Husker foe, March
29-30, at. Dallas, Tex.
Twelve Lettermen.
Twelve returning lettermen are
brightening the hopes that the
weather has darkened. Only the
first base position is short of ex
perienced material. With the
withdrawal from school of Thur
man Wright, this position is left
shy. Lettermen Butch Mathews,
Nattick, Mass., who played in the
outfield last spring; Bob Schlciger,
Omaha, and Norbert Tiemann,
Campbell, are promising hopefuls.
The Huskers are deep in the
pitching spot with Elroy Goly
stcin, Waco, expected to be the
mainstay, lie won three and lost
one last year and struck out 28
men in 33 innings. Elroy is a
sophomore and a lettcrman. Jim
Sandstedt, Omaha, who was in
jured but saw limited service;
Angclo Ossino, Omaha; Sterling
Van Vleck, Ncligh; Jim Sharp,
Omaha, and Jack Helmsing,
Omaha, are bidding for perma
nent opening stints.
Outfield Veterans.
In the outfield, several veterans
return. Fritz Hegwood, Omaha,
was the leading hitter last year
with .436; Bob Cerv, Weston, who
smashed seven home runs in 13
games; Wesley Maser, Lincoln, a
.306 hitter, and Harland Powley,
Pender, one of the squad's top
dclcnshe players, are the leading
contenders.
The Huskers open their Big
Seven schedule tit Oklahoma,
April 2-3. The opening home
games are April 16 and 17 against
