Tuesday, February 10, Scarlet Cagcrs Upset Kansas In 61-57 Win Coach Harry Good's University of Nebraska basketball men upset the dope bucket Saturday night when they knocked off the league leading Kansas Jayhawkcrs . at Lawrence, 61-57. It was a second-half scoring spree that gave the Huskers their second circuit win of the season. Kansas led, 24-20 at the half. Schleiger Tops Scarlet. Dick Schlciger, 6'5" center, was the top scorer for the Hu.skers. The big Omaha eager contributed 16 points to the Nebraska total. With ten minutes remaining in the game, Kansas knotted the score at 47-all. It was then that Schleiger aroppea another field goal, and the Jayhawters were on their way 10 aeieat. Otto Schncllbacher was the high scorer of the game with 19 points. The Kansas forward brought his 1?am to within two points of the i uskera near the end of the game, L ..t the rally was stopped there. Whitehead Comes Through Bus Whitehead came through again from his center post to bag 10 points, and Forward Claude Retherford hit for nine. Coach Good used 11 men during the con test, and only two failed to score. Nubbins Romp Past Concordia To Third Win Coach John Thompson's Univer sity of Nebraska Nubbins had lit tle trouble in disposing of the Con cordia Teachers college cagers Sat urday night, and romped away with an 84-41 victory. Bob Allen was the top scorer c! tha evening as he dropped 11 two-pointers through the net along with five free throws for 27 count ers. Doyle Busskohl connected with nine field goals for 18 points, and Bill Saler hit nine and added a free toss to total 19. Only during the opening min utes of the game was the Con cordia five able to stick close tp the Husker reserves. At halftime the Nubbins held a 38-13 margin. Hagouiaicr, Wolverine Star Sets U.S. Record Charles Fonville of the Uni versity of Michigan broke the American college shot put rec ord Saturday night in the Michigan State Relays with a heave of 56 feet 6Y inches. Fonville's toss was almost six inches beyond Georgetown's Al Blozis' mark of 56 feet Vx inch. Blozis set the former record in the 1940 N.C.A.A, meet. The Michigan Wolverine's record-breaking effort came on his second try of the evening and was just 6 inches short of the world record set by Jack Torrance of Louisiana State at Oslo, Sweden, in 1934. Officials said that Fonville's feat was the best indoor per formance in history. Fonville's record was the sec ond top mark set last week. The other was made by Gil Dodds, winner of 21 consecutive indoor mile races. The former Falls City, Neb., runner set a new mile world record of 4:05.3. Sunday Dodds was voted the John J. Iowa State de feated the Husker grapplers Fri day night at Ames, 16-14. and Minnesota University took meas ure of Coach Patterson's boys at Minneapolis Saturday night, 14-12. Iowa State was trailing, 14-1 !, before the heavyweight match and had to capture the final event of the evening to gain their victory. Lynn Daib pinned Andy Marinko vich for the necessary two-point margin. Mickey Snarano earned Ne braska's only fall of the evening when he pinned Don Stevenson in the 128-pound division. Each team won four matches. All the matches had to be de cided by judges m Minneapolis Saturday night as the Huskers dropped another close one. 14-12 Jerry Calhoun was unable to com pete because of an injury received at Iowa blate and lost on a de fault.
