Nebraska margin to 58-53 as the
big coliseum clock showed three
minutes of playing time left.
Guard Joe Brown netted three
points and Retherford added a
lay up shot in a matter of 20 sec
onds time to dampen all Jack
rabbit hopes for a win. y
Whitehead's strong under-tne-basket
play showed up as one
bright spot for the Huskers. who
generally were sluggish on the
floor. Mosser scored 11 points 101
second high Husker scoring honors
followed closely by Retherford,
who netted five fielders for ten
tallies.
Cops High Honors.
High individual scoring laureis
went to South Dakota's James
Schmidt, who whipped 18 points
through the nets. The shifty Jack
rabbit forward kept the visitors
in the running with his dangerous
under basket playing, but was
handicapped after being chargeo
with four personal fouls afterll
minutes of the first half. ion
Mohlenhoff, Schmidt's running
mate, helped the losers' cause with
11 counters.
Nebraska returns to conference
action Saturday night by traveling
to Lawrence for a clash with
Coach Phog Allen's high-flying
Jayhawks.

Kansas Teams
Lead Circuit
In Cage Race
Big Seven basketball is pretty
much of a Kansas affair, as Kan
sas university and Kansas State
continue to lead the pack. The
Jayhawks hold a 3-0 mark, while
Wildcats have won four and lost
none. However, only Colorado
has been definitely counted out
of the running.
Iowa State, with a 3-2 record,
and Oklahoma, 2-2, remain in the
championship running along with
the Cornhuskrs, who hold one
victory against two defeats.
Missouri hit its top form Satur
day when the Tigers stopped
favored Oklahoma, 49-43, at Co
lumbia. Iowa State squeezed past
Colorado 39-38 on the Boulder
court. The Cyclones had to pro
duce nine points in the last two
minutes to earn the decision. The
Buffs will attempt to even the
score when they travel to Ames
Saturday.
Buffs Scare Wildcats.
Kansas State had to turn on
all their power Monday night to
down Colorado at Boulder. With
ten minutes of play remaining, the
Buffs pulled to within two points
of the Wildcats. But the Manhat
tan boys cut the rally short and
won, 50-44. Clarence Brannum
and Harold Howey led the Weld
cats to their fourth straight cir
cuit win. Brannum took scoring
honors with 14 points.
George Sauer
Leaves Kansas
To Boss Navy
George Sauer, former Univer
sity of Nebraska All-American v
fullback, has accepted the posi
tion of head football coach at the
United States Naval Academy.
Sauer resigned as head coach
at the University of Kansas to ac
cept a four-year contract as the
Middie coach.
Bud Wilkenson, present Univer
sity of Oklahoma football coach,
was considered for the post but
took himself out of the picture
early last week.
Sauer's resignation came as a
tremendous blow to the Kansas
coaching staff, for while losing
one of the finest young coaches
in the country, they also stand to
lose the services of Back field
Coach Vic Bradshaw and Line
Coach Robert Ingalls. These two
may assist Sauer at his new post.
Athletic Director E. C. Quigley
of Kansas stated that it was not
a question of salary that caused
the change, but rather a better
chance for advancement.
Sauer will have considerable
freedom in his new job as far as
the selection of his principal as
sistants.
While serving as the Jayhawk
coach, the former Husker star led
his teams to two consecutive Big
Six co-championships.
