Matmeii Tuesday BY DICK LEBBS (Daily Nebraska Sport Writer) Nebraska's inexperienced mat squad will open the sea son Tuesday night at the Coliseum with a powerful team from Cornell College as foes. Coach B. R. Patterson has designated a somewhat patched starting lineup. Bob Yambor, top man in the 121- pouna class, is not ready to go and will be replaced in that di vision by Ken Brown. Yambor spent several days in a Lincoln hospital recovering from a stom ach ailment. Rex Hoy, representing the Huskers in the heavyweight di vision, was groomed for the top spot after Tom Novak was forced to give up wrestling because of an injury received during the football season. Other Scarlet mat representa tives include . Micky Kelly in the 128-lb. class, Jack Barrett at 136 Jack Tamai grappling in the 145- lb. class, Dick Hill at 155. Calhoun Takes Over. The 165-lb. match will find Jerry Calhoun carrying Ne braska's hopes. This spot was va cated by Andy Marinkovich, who moved up to match skill with the 1 5-pounders. ine 134 cornea squad won both the National A.A.U. and Na tional Collegiate Athletic associa tion team championships. This season Coach Paul K. Scott pre sents an all-letterman lineup with the exception of the 175-pound starter. Leading Cornell's array of clever bone-twisters is Lowell Lange, 136-pound National A.A.U. and N.C.A.A. champ. Another highly regarded member of Scott's outfit is Rodger Snook, who took second place in the 145 pound division in both national tourneys in 1947. Cornell Wins Two. The Cornell team has rung up two overwhelming victories this season. Beloit College was stopped 29 to 3 and the New Orleans Ath letic club was completely swamped, 38-0. The Huskers will get little rest the remainder of the week. They go against the University of Colo rado Friday night, Jan. 16, and Colorado State College of Greeley will test the Huskers Saturday night Matches start at 7:30 p. m. Freshmen Nip B Quint, 46-41 The freshman basketball squad got off to an early lead and stayed ahead to whip the Nub bins squad 4C-41 in the pre liminary game to the Missouri Nebraska Big Seven clash in the coliseum Monday night. Gates led the Frosh scoring with eight points, followed by the Lincoln aces, Dick Means and Bob Pierce, with 7 and 6 respectively. For the Nubbins, Jack Cady caged 10 to take game honors. Jim Van Burgh sunk seven and Kenny Ander son six. The Frosh squad led 22-17 at the half, and then went way out in front at 30-19 and 38-25 be fore a belated Nubbins rally, led by Cady and Van Burgh, could narrow the margin. IM Track Meet Scheduled Today Tuesday, January 13, Runners will take their places, the starter will give his warning, and the Intramural track meet of 1948 will be underway. The meet will be held in the indoor track under the east stadium and will begin at 5:00. Many strong entries have been recieved by the Intramural of fice and the meet should be a repeat over last year's tight struggle. All contestants must be in starting positions at the pre viously specified time or they will be disqualified. Missouri 65' . . route, committing a total of 24 infractions. The Husker won the parallel bars' event and tied for first with Vito Zinzi of Illinois on the long horse. Only other point maker for the Huskers was Leo Geier who scored in both the long horse and tumbling events. Nebraska s Sprague and Geier were the top point makers for the day finishing with 154 Vi and 136 points respectively. j The Illini are favored by Chi cago sports writers to take the championship in the Big Nine this year thus giving the Huskers sat isfaction and prestige of having met one of the nation's strongest gymnastics teams. A capacity crowd of 5,000 fans, largest crowd in the history of the school for a gymnastics meet, wit nessed the dual affair.
